The palace exam is imminent. There are rumours that candidates at the Yingtian Academy are being hunted by the King of Hell. After receiving a strange letter from his mentor, the dean, Bao Zheng sets off with Zhan Zhao to investigate the academy. However, the academy is not as simple as it seems; the dean has vanished, students are dying one after another, and the entire campus is shrouded in a bizarre atmosphere. Bao Zheng is determined to uncover the truth in order to find his mentor and stop the killings by the King of Hell. Inside the academy, he encounters an aggressive supervisor and unexpectedly meets the childhood sweetheart of the dean. Bao Zheng also ventures alone into the eerie Hell of Ten Kings. Story about Bao Zheng (BZ) before he become the famous Judge Bao. BZ comes to Yong Tian academy to investigate the mysterious death of some students. People said it's the king of hell that killed them. So far, there are 5 students who died, and each of their death represent 5 levels of hell, that's why people keep saying that it's king of hell doing.
BZ who's not believe with the nonsense about king of hell started to investigate it, at the same time he also investigate his missing teacher.
When he started investigating, he experience a lot of weird stuff going on. But not because of king of hell, more like people doing magic or drugs to do evil stuff. So together with Zhan Zhao & Ouyang Qing, BZ continue his investigation about the students & also his missing teacher.
That's pretty much the story without giving any more spoilers. Overall for underrated movies, this is one good production.
Apprentice of Dee Renjie?
The story is similar to any Dee Renjie mystery film. Although the protagonists doesnt know any martial arts, he has a sidekick who accompanied him in all his investigations.Low ranking official who received a letter from his mentor and upon visiting him, he found suspecting situation that caused him to investigate.
Although he has limited resorces and power, he persevered. He is witty and brave. He investigated scary places by himself and I was wondering how he will protect himself without knowing any martial arts.
The production is good. Scene sets were fitting, props were placed well and wardrobes were nicely chosen for each scene.
It is a recommended viewing for any period mystery fanatic. As to rewatch value, this is my second time watching this film. I still enjoyed it. Actually came across scenes I missed for some reason.
