Got my attention in every episode
With Chinese dramas, I have a tendency to fast forward or skip episodes even with the great ones. I mean it’s not easy to fill in stories even when the plot is great. This drama builds the lead and supporting characters extremely well, the subplots are relevant to the character development albeit some may find them too long but I personally enjoyed the variety nod mysteries. Reminded me of Quincy, ME (dating myself). There is enough twists but not to convoluted that it hurts your neck. A satisfying ending leaving you hello ng good for rooting the main characters. As I said before a well written story will always keep the reader or audience glued. In a society we’re women were once treated so low they aborted girl babies I am glad to see heroines emerging in stronger leading roles. I hope they do more of these kind of shows showing the strength of a woman in a male dominated culture. Was this review helpful to you?
Must watch
It was really an interesting series. I love the turns of every events, a mystery indeed. I love how smart and intelligent Qin wan is and how kind are the Yue family towards her. In every turn there is always a plot of twist that keep the series more interesting as the episode goes on. It a must watch series. I highly recommend it if you want an intelligent and capable and not annoying fl.Was this review helpful to you?
It Started Great, Until......
the mistery cases are good.the story pace is good, not draggy.
the flaws i noticed so far (i'm currently at ep 16) are Landy Li's acting. why is she always so stiff with romance scene? i've watched her several times and notice she cant bring her good acting at the the roamance scenes. her previous drama i watched was A Love of Nirvana with Ren Jia Lun and she is so stiff when involving romance scenes. i feel no chemestry coming from her. the "love expressions" only come from the male leads. other than romance, she's good. hopefuly she can improve.
as for Au Rui Peng, his acting is good. even his expression is always on point.
if i can criticise one thing to the writer, please stop pairing FL's personal maid with ML's personal guard. it's boring. let the ML's personal guard be paired with second FL. or let the FL's maid be paired with another prince. create something new. thankyou

Justice will be served at the right time (Best Mystery drama of 2025)
I really love watching mystery dramas, especially those involving case investigations. My last watch was 'Mysterious Lotus Casebook,' which also aired on iQiyi. Now, I'm completely hooked on 'Corner's Diary' right from the first five episodes – every episode is just so suspenseful! I decided to watch this because the plot seemed interesting. I don't usually watch ongoing dramas because I often get left hanging or drop them quickly if I'm not impressed within the first three episodes. But with this series, the writer is incredibly talented; you'll find yourself wondering who the culprit is and even creating your own theories. That means the writer is truly impressive if they can get viewers actively thinking while watching. I highly recommend watching this drama if you loved 'Mysterious Lotus Casebook' and also enjoy romance elements. I'm sure you'll love this one; you won't regret it – not a single episode is a waste! Was this review helpful to you?

problems with the narrative
SPOiLERSThis drama was a very interesting viewing experience for me. I am not so much critiqueing the drama as explaining how my experience of watching this may have been different from others. I like to offer a different viewpoint for those who are wondering whether to watch this drama or not.
My dissatisfaction with this drama had to do mostly with the narrative. I only realized at the end that this drama was based on the novel and I think that was some of why it felt disjointed to me. The drama took the beginning of the novel and changed it into a different Story in the second half. The abstraction of the themes from the cases was admirably translated into Political intrigue so there was a level of cohesion. So kudos to the screen writers And the viewers who could see that. Maybe it was necessary to get past censorship.
I expected the initial crimes and clues to be more pertinent to the finale. That said, the last few episodes did live up to the foreshadowing and the symbolic meanings of the clues. How the vigilante group was led by someone who wanted power and revenge more than moral reckoning was a great twist. The level of corruption of the emperor and some of his family is exposed. This made for a unique competition for the throne plot.
However, I did feel like certain balls were dropped that could have led to some intriguing plot lines. That was the direction I was going with the initial forensic findings related to syphilis and its treatment with mercury and cinebar which are also poisons. I should have known better. After all this is a historical c drama subject to censorship. I understand that novels are less subject to censorship.
For example, one hypothesis I had was that those little girls in the well had been infected with syphilis. And that's why they were there. That would have been a big cover up had it been known by the powers that be. I think the drama suggested they were all killed because they were going to be discovered? There was also mention of someone who was trafficking the girls.
I did not even know there was a novel initially. Apparently Syphilis and its treatment with mercury and cinebar were thematic throughout the Novel. There was additional intrigue to do with the girls in the well. There was a suggestion that the emperor was also committing his crimes using syphilis as the means.
So I would have been reading the right novel but I was not watching the right drama😁 for the story line I was imagining.
I have told myself to be cautious about watching dramas that are based on novels but not for the reason I was disappointed here.
I can value this drama as it was presented but still feel like I would have enjoyed the drama more if it had taken a different route. I won't be reading the hundred plus or five hundred plus or however many chapters in the novel though😄!
I hope this is a helpful review.

The best detective costume drama
Since I started watching C-drama in 2019, this is the best detective drama I have ever seen, and also the best costume drama in 2 years that I can rate 10/10 for every part of the drama. The cast is well selected and all of them portrayed their role very well. Initially, I watched this drama just for Ao Rui Peng because the genre is not my favorite. However, after finishing watching this drama I also like the female lead and many other support cast. Ao Rui Peng strongly proved to be a versatile actor. He perfectly performed his different types of characters in 4 different dramas airing this year including Coroner’s Detective. The story, costume, production, visual… are all perfect. I did not expect that a thriller, detective drama would have very beautiful cast, costume, and set up with great story and script. For those who like detective costume drama, this is a must watch!!!Was this review helpful to you?
BEST DRAMA OF 2025!!!
The storyline, the acting, the characters, the chemistry, the visuals, the ending everything was sooo good. I loved how male and female leads both were smart, mature and very supportive of each other. None of them were childish or had stupid misunderstandings. Both of them were super green flags. Other 2 couples (Yan Li x Princess Ning and Bai Feng x Fu Ling) were really cute too. I was really happy that all 3 couples got their happy ending they deserved. The ending was really satisfying too. I hate open endings or when all good characters sacrifice themselves at the end but this ending was really good. All bad ppl got what they deserved. I hope cdrama writers take notes from this ending and give us happy endings more often. The crime plots were really well written and interesting. 10/10Was this review helpful to you?

Welcome to the Coroner's Spooky Diary
Coroner’s Diary has been my long-awaited drama during a dry spell, and though it may not have huge buzz or ratings, it’s definitely a hidden gem worth supporting. The story follows Shen Wan, daughter of a Ministry of Justice official, who escapes an assassination attempt that kills her family. To survive, she impersonates her deceased uncle’s daughter, Qin Wan, and becomes a coroner in Jingzhou, solving bizarre murder cases while navigating dangerous family politics. Along the way, she gains the trust of Yan Chi, heir of Prince Rui and commander of Shuoxi Army. The drama shines through its well-crafted murder mysteries, palace intrigue, and rich character development. Each case is carefully detailed with accurate forensic science woven into complex emotional and political contexts. The morally grey characters add unpredictability—no one is purely good or evil, and motives are layered and nuanced.
Unlike typical revenge-driven leads, Qin Wan seeks justice through law and intellect, which adds a refreshing depth to her character. Yan Chi complements her perfectly, with his green-flag boyfriend traits and hidden emotional wounds that echo her own struggles, creating a compelling dynamic.
The acting is stellar across the board, especially from Landy Li and Ao Ruipeng, whose chemistry is palpable even in subtle moments. Production values are high, with impressive costumes, props, and OST that enhance the storytelling without waste.
Notably, the secondary couple adds humor and heart, providing lightness amidst the tension. Their playful antics are a highlight, especially their boisterous brothel scene.
Overall, Coroner’s Diary is a thoughtfully written drama blending thriller, mystery, and historical elements. It’s far superior to many contemporaries and perfect for fans who enjoy suspense and layered storytelling. Highly recommended as an underrated treasure.
Happy watching!

not a detective series
it's not a detective series, it's a court drama romance with a detective elementthe murder cases do happen, but they're more just an excuse for Qin Wan and Yan Chi to involve themselves in court politics.
I like that the romance is clear and they already share their mutual feelings pretty early on, but they're not in a state to publicly declare their relationship so it's kind of a slog. I also like that there are some light pairings for the side characters too - maid x best bud; best girl x court bro

Couldn’t continue
Is it just me or the acting is super terrible? The ML acting was amazing but the FL did lack abit of emotions. But some of the other supporting characters’ acting were super awkward and fake. I tried to watch up to episode 5 through the badly acting but I just couldn’t. But after seeing so many people commenting that it gets better, I decided to watch it one more time before stopping it in episode 11.
I really couldn’t continue it if I want to , so I would rate the rewatch value super low.
The story was also abit lacking, the mysteries were all quite easy to grasp and solve. I came to watch just for the romance. The romance between the two leads were quite strong but I didn’t really see the chemistry between them.
Therefore, I wouldn’t really rewatch this if I could. It’s just a waste of time.

The best drama I've watched
I've watched more than a hundred dramas and this is one of the best! If there's a score more than 10 stars I would definitely score this higher. Love both the main leads who have a good head over their shoulders. Story is flawlessly written and coudn't find any fault with it. No typical cold guy syndrome or hate turned to love cliche story. Everything just flowed smoothly into place. All the bad characters got what they deserved. Villains killing each other was an ingenius idea. Hope there will be more dramas like this. Was this review helpful to you?
