Great visuals, great chemistry
●Some minor things could be better. I know this is drama so I tried not to expect unreasonable things.● I'm a romance fan and intrigue is not my favorite but overall it was good. At some point it was hard to follow but I blame the subs. So I decided to trust show's logic and enjoy the story.
●I think the separation should had been handled better.Despite that SD actions were with good intentions there had to be a conversation(on screen) between them.Maybe it's because I'd like more interaction between our couple. I know it's my preference so ...
●Overall it was very good experience.
●A lot of episodes are worth rewatching.
●A lot of good, funny and romantic moments.
● I liked both actors. Very convincing and natural presence.

Got Fooled by MDL Rating
Started watching because of MDL high rating. Wanted to drop this series earlier but didn’t because of MDL rating. Thought that because of the high rating, the series would get better but it just got more boring with each new episode. Very slow progress in the story telling. Tedious to watch. Dropped the series after 12 episodes of repetitive boring directionless storytelling. Was this review helpful to you?
Overl all is good but …
I found this drama is very interestingOver all is good, funny, male lead is great so far but I found it a bit annoying for female lead
Why the writer write this kind of character is ruin All the drama I think 🤔
I see all drama series Sometimes I wonder why they created the characters

really frustrated with this show and honestly don’t think it’s worth watching for me
Total waste of time — I dropped it at episode 15. The female lead is beyond annoying and never learns from her mistakes. The male lead keeps saving her again and again, yet she stays selfish, ungrateful, and unbelievably dumb. Instead of appreciating him after everything he’s done, she just gives him attitude every single time. No character development, no chemistry, just pure frustration. No hate to the fans though — this is just my personal opinion, so sorry if some people enjoyed it.”

Loved every second....!!
This was a complete surprise. Every single character's acting and role was done fabulously. The FL lead casting was bang on, the way she potrayed her character was such a delight. No delicate darling nor over the top unrealistic skills. Just a regular smart person who has strong survival skills and loves her family and wants to prove something. This was my first Ding Yu Xi drama and i absolutely developed a massive crush on him or rather the role he played. One of my personal favourite things is to see actors who have some meat on the bones and are not sticklike or too skinny. Makes the roles they play comical imo.
The story was very well written and potrayed. I was absolutely immersed into it from episode1. You love the characters you are meant to love and hate the ones you should. No over the top overacting with comedy.
This is my second time watching this drama and many times I have found myself just looking for YouTube edits of my favourite scenes...just like that.
Highly recommend this drama. It deserves all the love it got and more.

All Hail to the Great Chief Shen Du
I started watching this drama back in Sept 2024, but only watched like 30 minutes of it before moving on to another drama. I went back in May 2025, stopped watching it again and then a little bit in June, and I honestly felt bad because I had been sidetracked with so many dramas that I was waiting for. November 2025 came and I was like, you know what? I need to finish it now because I’ve been seeing a lot of good comments about this drama and I should definitely continue. I have watched Ding Yuxi in Love Game in Eastern Fantasy and Love You Seven Times and enjoyed watching his dramas. After finishing a few episodes, I really wanted to slap myself because why on earth did I waited so long to watch this beautiful drama?? The main character, Shen Du, is the great chief Shen Du aka The White Ghost of Dacang, the head of the imperial guards, and everyone is afraid of him. He looked really powerful here. Arrogant and domineering, but we always know why a character is like that. It’s definitely a facade. A barrier. I noticed how muscular he looked here compared to his older dramas. We also meet the female lead, Yan Xing (or Liuniang for some) is a brave little clerk of the Ministry of Justice. The FL is a brave little cookie, but every time she goes out on her own, she always gets herself in trouble. Her sister who was supposed to marry Shen Du, eloped with another man. To save the Yan family, she took her sister’s place. She knew Shen Du at the beginning of the story, but he acted like he didn’t know her. I love the ML because even though he found out that Yan Xing lied and hid some secrets from him, especially becoming a spy to track his whereabouts and activities, he understood why she did that. I love how jealous he gets when she mentions Pan Chi or whenever she goes out with him to investigate. Like that one time, Shen Du kicked Pan Chi and he fell inside the well. Hilarious. I love her family, they were all supportive. There were some deaths in the story and it was really heartbreaking. I loved everything about this drama. Can you imagine your whole family being annihilated but you had to choose another way to survive by denouncing your father. It must be so hard for Shen Du. Even with a tough exterior, he has a very good heart. I’m glad the empress trusted Shen Du. He did the right thing. I was so glad Princess of Valor and Prince Xian didn’t do anything to hurt Shen Du and Yan Xing. At first I was like, what are their agendas? Can they be trusted? The actor who played the villain, Lai, the black fiend, did an amazing job. He was ruthless and delusional. Ding Yuxi was awesome here with his sword fights. Awesome actor. Anyway, the ending was cute. We didn’t see any babies, but it’s okay. I highly recommend this drama. One of the best, in my opinion. Was this review helpful to you?

By far the best Ding Yuxi drama I have ever watch!
This is definitely the best Ding Yuxi drama I ever watch as a viewer who also watched his drama on Love You Seven Times and Love Game in Eastern Fantasy which has much more rating than Melody of Golden Age. The acting, the flow of story is totally amazing! I finished this in just less than a week! (Sacrificed my time to study even) definitely worth the watch if you are into strong and smart ml with super smart fl then this show is for you! Definitely gonna rewatch this one day again deserve a 10Was this review helpful to you?
Good one
Melody of the Golden Age — I liked the drama, especially the chemistry between the leads. In the beginning, the male protagonist's character was rude and arrogant. He never spoke in a humble manner. He always carried an attitude on his face. Everyone was scared of him, and nobody praised him; they always said bitter words behind his back.
But this kind of behavior was only seen in the first few episodes. After getting married, he gradually became softer in his behaviour, though on the surface he seemed the same.
On the other hand, the female protagonist's character was humble and helpful. She was kind to everyone and never held grudges against anyone. She also had a past story with the male protagonist.
I liked the character of Lu Chui Chui as well and her love story.
I liked the performances by the leads and the emotions of love, hatred, and annoyance they expressed through their acting. I must say their expressions were incredible.
Overall, the drama is good, and I recommend it.

Started for the mystery, stayed for Shen Du
Real rating is 11 for the music & 10 for romance so 8.9/10I have a crush on Ding YuXi. He’s so *hawt* in this role and I wish the show was faster to get better *hits* of hotness seretonin. That said it takes about 10 episodes for us to get more of that the serious/stoic Shen Du.
I think the plot overall could have been a bit tighter. There’s a lot of moving variables and characters that make sense and connect well, but at the same time don’t really affect the plot. We spend so much time on the prince and princess but they don’t really actually add to the plot and their storylines dragged the overall experience. I know it was to cause intrigue and make us think maybe one of them is evil but that line of thought doesn’t even sustain itself with what we are given so I feel like the show would have been much stronger if it was closer to 35 episodes instead and removed some of the extra noise.
Also did they really have to kill Marshall Xu and Yun Que 😭 I know they were the “least important couple” but they were still so cute and their death was so sad. Always gotta kill a couple or something for the tears and stakes but I feel like coma and they wake up would have sufficed. Whatever. I saw it coming that a secondary couple would end with tragedy and once he had that cute moment about the wedding it was game over.
I would definitely rewatch it but skip the parts that were more espionage than general mystery or romance. The antagonist is just an actual crazy man that needed a better mother and therapy so he was pretty one dimensional and boring in that way. I’m still not sure I understand his mother’s motives for traumatizing her child but sure let’s go with that.
Last but not least THIS OST was amazing. I have been pretty generous to music of shows giving 10 if they fit the overall show, but even when I took a break from this show I was listing to the OST so I had to give it an 11 bc it was THAT good. I wish Ryan Ding had more songs!
### Original Thoughts & Ideas
- Good vs evil is pretty black and white in this show unlike something like The Prisoner of Beauty. We have some “gray” characters but even they are mostly good or mostly bad. The Empress Dowager seemed to have in fact not wanted the consort’s child be the emperor but it’s not clear how much of a role she *actually* played in the consort’s suicide. But the Black Fiend was truly just a man who saw his mom die and made a cult about reincarnation to kinda, not really deal with the trauma. I almost want to label him a victim and in a way he is because his whole life was built off this narrative his mother fed him. But he’s still a “black” character. He isn’t nice to his adoptive sisters, he attacks the woman he claims to love, and throws any blame of his actions on the Empress Dowager for believing what was pretty solid evidence against innocent but framed people. We could label Shen Du as “gray” because he’s a “dark horse” type guy but I would more call him “good” with a wall as protection due to his own childhood trauma.
- It is interesting that both men witnessed extreme wrong doing to their parent(s) but one chose the path of righteousness and the other of sinister obsession.

The drama rejects the trope of a fragile wife dragged into court politics. Yan Shing uses her legal expertise to carve out her own authority. The narrative never treats her career as a liability or belittles her youth, boldly establishing that a woman's value lies entirely in her intellect and moral spine.
Shen Du: From High-Handed Commander to Loyal Shield
He initially presents as a terrifying, high-handed He initially presents as a terrifying, controlling commander—a sharp contrast to Duke Su’s immediate confidence. However, once he witnesses Yan Shing’s extraordinary deduction skills, his rigid walls crumble. While Duke Su operates as a shadow assassin in the dark, Shen Du acts as a formal judicial shield. He actively legitimizes her investigations, using his official guard rank to ensure she can safely hunt down clues without court interference
♟️ Yan Zhenjing: The Expansion of Justice
Her journey marks a profound transition from a cautious scribe caught in a forced marriage into a fearless defender of the law. Her empathy expands past personal survival to seek justice for innocent victims of political conspiracies. She heals Shen Du’s deep-seated familial grief through her moral clarity, evolving from a terrified pawn into an indispensable partner in truth.
🏛️ Fragile Cowards vs. Judicial Integrity
The court's corruption is driven by insecure, weak-willed officials who orchestrate brutal conspiracies purely to preserve their official ranks. In sharp contrast stands the secure masculinity of Shen Du. He completely abandons the arrogant demands of a typical ancient husband, choosing to risk his own military position to champion and protect a female officer's career and safety.🔍 Courtroom Evolution & Bruised VulnerabilityTheir connection deepens through shared blood and high-stakes trials rather than empty words. Shen Du’s icy composure completely shatters during dangerous ambushes, revealing a desperate panic underneath his terrifying reputation. Their emotional peak hits a beautiful turning point when he swerves from an authoritarian husband to an emotionally vulnerable partner, asking out of a deeply bruised heart: "Why am I the last person you think of when in need?"
❤️❤️❤️ Why this is perfect for rewatching:Every rewatch uncovers new nuances in Shen Du’s micro-expressions as his demeanor shifts from cold suspicion to fierce devotion. Whether it is her utilizing the empire's legal codes to defend his honor, or his desperate physical maneuvers to shield her during assassination attempts, every viewing reveals brilliant psychological layers. An absolute masterpiece.

So good chemistry
The chemistry between the leads is absolutely precious. I love the whole 'cold on the outside, but a total softie for her' vibe from the male lead, and the female lead is just a ray of sunshine—so honest and cute! Seeing them naturally fall for each other while working the cases together was everything. I honestly wish we got more romantic scenes, but I still loved every second of it. I heard they’re starring in another project together soon, and I’m so hyped to see that chemistry on screen again! Was this review helpful to you?
The drama that deserved a chance
One of the best adaptations, from a less interesting book.Neither the story (after reading) nor the male character particularly attracted me.
But, I watched it and fell in love with the lead pair. I started because I basically like romantic crime stories. I like it when the leaders are intelligent, naivety is not a sin, but I hate stupid characters.
I was not disappointed. The chemistry, the dialogues and the visuals, the costumes and the music are also perfect. I re-watched it several times even after The End. / I'll probably watch it a few more times.
Don't look if you like ML with another boat. (Because FL and ML's romance is the point, without that you will only see their faults)
faults: (and there are many) - The supporting characters are confusing (e.g. the queen, the best friend, the girl's father...etc)
- rough cuts / sometimes we think we missed something, or we skip time or because of cuts, hasty and funny
Just give the drama a chance....it's worth it, .... it's worth it, .....it's worth it....
Both the actors and the director put their heart and soul into it.
And because they managed to enchant: 10
