A brown bear attacks the Shimakawa family home in Rokusensawa, Tomamae Village, Hokkaido, killing two people. The brown bear also appears at the wake for the two victims, then breaks into a neighboring house and kills children and a pregnant woman. The police are dispatched, but their efforts prove ineffective, so the district head decides to ask Yamaoka Ginshiro, a rough but highly skilled hunter, for help. After the bear is killed, the villagers lose their way as they debate what measures should be taken in the future.
