Creators of 'No Tail to Tell' on what makes Kim Hye Yoon a one-of-a-kind gumiho

The creators of No Tail to Tell share insights on the story of Eun Ho, played by Kim Hye Yoon, a one-of-a-kind gumiho.

No Tail to Tell tells the story of a peculiar gumiho, Eun Ho (Kim Hye Yoon) — who, unlike the typical ones, avoids becoming human at all costs to enjoy all the fun things life has to offer — and narcissistic soccer star Kang Si Yeol (Lomon), who crosses paths with her.

The gumiho, an imaginary creature passed down through Eastern legends, has been depicted in countless forms across numerous works of content. This nine-tailed fox, long regarded as mysterious and alluring yet also frightening and terrifying, is this time brought to life by Kim Hye Yoon as a modern gumiho Eun Ho with a different kind of charm. The biggest point of differentiation is, without question, that she is a gumiho who does not want to become human.

Writers Cho A Yeong and Park Chan Young commented, "I think that things which have been dealt with so often have that kind of power. The reason the gumiho character has been used so frequently is that it is, to that extent, a fascinating fictional being."

They continued, "However, the question that came to mind was, 'Why is it that in stories, such an attractive gumiho always wants to become human?' That question became the starting point of this story. Rather than conforming herself to the standards of the world, Eun Ho lives in the way she wants — confident and a little willful. Through her, we felt certain that we could tell a new kind of gumiho story, different from anything before, and we prepared this drama with that conviction."

In the drama, Eun Ho lives among the human world in her own way. She grants wishes that cannot be fulfilled by human ability in exchange for a price and enjoys her unchanging youth and beauty.

Director Kim Jung Kwon, who said he decided to take on the project after being drawn to the fresh detour from the conventional gumiho stories, explained, "Gumihos have had a scary image, but the gumiho in our drama is different in that she is an 'MZ gumiho' who has no interest in the human liver, doesn't seduce men, and rather refuses to become human."

Writers Park Chan Young and Cho A Yeong added, "If we had to describe Eun Ho, she's a 'little devil'. She's willful in everything she does — eccentric and mischievous, a sort of antihero."

"But within Eun Ho, there are moments when kind and vulnerable qualities she herself isn't aware of pop out — qualities that, when you think about it, are the most 'human' of all. Because of that goodness, Eun Ho can never quite take that final step toward becoming [absolute] worse at the decisive moment, and it's that contradictory aspect that is Eun Ho's greatest charm."

The actress portraying this one-of-a-kind gumiho, Kim Hye Yoon said, "Eun Ho's charm lies in how simply she thinks and then puts her thoughts straight into action," adding, "Because she is over 900 years old and possesses supernatural powers, I tried to use mature interjections and a commanding tone of speech to express situations where she has the upper hand over the people around her."
