'Agent Kim Reactivated' concludes, 'Spooky in Love' goes steady
Han So Hee shares her dreams and goals for her career and personal life.
Ahead of the release of her new film, Project Y, Han So Hee had an interview with local reporters in Seoul.
Project Y follows Mi Seon (Han So Hee) and Do Gyeong (Jeon Jong Seo), who, living in the heart of the high-end district of Gangnam and dreaming of a different tomorrow, end up stealing dirty money and gold to escape their rock-bottom lives.
The K-movie was invited to the Special Presentations section of the Toronto International Film Festival and the Korean Cinema Today – Special Premiere section at the Busan International Film Festival.
Although she drew attention early in her career for her striking looks, Han So Hee clearly expressed her desire to be recognized for her acting skills rather than her appearance. Her new film, Project Y, is a work that shows a new side of her in her craft and character transformation.
Han So Hee first explained how she landed the role of Mi Seon. "Jeon Jong Seo and I met the director without having our roles finalized, and we talked a lot about which role suited each of us better and what we could each express. After four to five hours of discussion, the roles were finally decided."
Han So Hee also shared that Project Y came at a perfect time. "I had been friends with Jeon Jong Seo before the script was even given to me, and the story was about two women. Stories driven proactively by two female characters are rare, but the story progressed so smoothly that I felt the work had its owners, and I approached filming with that mindset."
She also explained that she was drawn to the role because it was the opposite of the characters she had played before. "It was a time when I felt that I was lacking a lot in my acting. Showing a new side of oneself is part of our work, and I was thirsty for that. I came across Mi Seon at just the right time. I have always played characters more mature than my age, but with this character, I felt I could also reflect my more immature sides."
Action was also incorporated as the revenge narrative developed, and Han So Hee said she spent a lot of time thinking about it. "At the end, when punishing President To, I kept wondering what kind of action sequence could overturn someone who has two subordinates. I discussed it extensively with the action director and thought a lot about how to convince the audience."
Han So Hee, having handled numerous action projects such as My Name and Gyeongseong Creature, did not find this film particularly difficult. Looking back, although she shot to stardom through the drama The World of the Married, her challenges were not limited to melodramas; she has continued to show new sides of herself across various genres.
Han So Hee said, "It's true that after The World of the Married I received a lot of scripts, but I didn't want to end up as an actress with just a pretty face. That's why I chose My Name at the time. I didn't want to remain in the public eye as just a fleeting presence." "Now, before I get any older, I want to take on melodramas as well, and I want people to say more often, 'She did well in that work,' rather than just, 'She's pretty.'"
Although she has risen to stardom, she said she continues to make an effort to remain grounded. She said, "People say I live a glamorous life, but it's not that glamorous. I still work part-time at a friend's café. I try to preserve that kind of lifestyle because it's what makes me happy. As a [regular] person, not as an actress, I want to get married at the right time, have a child, and live my life. I hope to have someone on my side."
