Kang Ha Neul returns to the big screen with a new character transformation. This time, he takes on the role of Woo Sang, a popular crime streamer, who finds himself in a crisis while trying to uncover a crime.
In his recent interview with Sports Kyunghyang, the actor shared insights about the movie and his movie character.
Streaming follows Woo Sang (Kang Ha Neul), a popular online streamer, as he discovers a clue to an unsolved serial murder case and broadcasts his pursuit of the culprit in real-time.
"It's a film that feels like a real live broadcast. Of course, this kind of format can bring mixed reactions, but I think taking this path instead of a safe [and conventional] one shows the director's courage. When someone pushes forward with something that others might deem unnecessary, we call that 'romanticism.' That's why I supported the director’s choice. Moreover, every single scene was a collaborative effort—not just between the director and actors, but with the entire crew contributing ideas. That atmosphere on set made it a truly great experience. I think this was only possible because the director was so open-minded."
While playing a streamer in the film, Kang came to understand the thrill of chasing money.
"When acting, I either have to empathize with the character or understand his situation. This time, I couldn't empathize with Woo Sang's personality, but I did understand his situation. Imagine if every action I took accordingly deposited a huge sum into my bank account. In that case, I feel like I'll be able to keep doing it."
He was also asked about his thoughts on cyber wreckers — those who stir up controversy online for profit.
"Whether I say they're good or bad, it won't change anything. But I do feel sorry for them. I just wish they wouldn't do it. Why do they do that? Why do they stream such [controversial] things? This film also explores the dangers that real-time streaming can bring. If, after watching this movie, people are reminded of Streaming — even once in a while — when they watch real-time live content, then I think the film has fulfilled its purpose."
For the next two months, Kang Ha Neul is booked and busy. Following the release of Streaming, his new film Yadang: The Snitch will hit theaters in April.
"I don't get to decide the release dates, but since things turned out this way, I'm just focusing on and dedicating myself to promoting every project each day. Rather than feeling satisfied that my films are releasing at a time when there aren't many Korean movies out, I just hope audiences see my films as good films."
