Kim Da Mi, the lead actress of the Netflix film The Great Flood, shares her filming experience.

The Great Flood made a strong start by entering the top 10 in 92 countries. The film depicts the desperate struggle of people for survival on the last day of Earth after a massive flood engulfs the planet, as they fight for their lives inside an apartment building gradually getting submerged in water.

Kim Da Mi plays An Na, an artificial intelligence development researcher who fights to survive amid the massive deluge.

Due to the film's setting, Kim Da Mi had to shoot almost the entire time while soaked in water. "At first, I didn't even realize that I was constantly wet, but as filming went on, I became aware that I really was wet all the time. In the beginning, it felt uncomfortable, but later I think I got used to it," adding, "When I would go to the set, I would immediately get into the pool and come back out like that."

She also recalled, "It was physically exhausting. That's why they gave us breaks on set. After filming for about an hour, we would rest for a few tens of minutes and then resume."

She also pointed out the most difficult scene. "Honestly, everything was hard, but I had to lift Eun Seong [who played her on-screen son]. There were a lot of scenes shot in long takes, and in some cases, short takes were connected into a long take using CGI. Every detail had to be right — even the wrinkles on the coat," she said, adding, "We spent hours trying to get that right. Even if everything else worked, if that didn’t match, it wouldn't work."

She also shared her experience working with child actor Kwon Eun Seong. "There were many scenes where I had to run while holding Eun Seong. At the time, he weighed around 20 kg, but he actually ate less and went on a diet because of me. Since I don't have anyone his age around me and haven't had many chances to interact with children, I think I learned a lot, just as An Na did."

She also talked about the difficulties of filming underwater. "When you shoot underwater, you have to keep your eyes open, but you can't see well. You can't even breathe. Having to perform action scenes in that situation was scary."

She added with a laugh, "The makeup team did my makeup in the morning, but it was almost useless," and added, "I did end up hating water for a while, but then I forgot about it again."

The Great Flood is streaming on Netflix.
