The official trailer, poster, and stills for the Netflix original Japanese film Bullet Train Explosion, led by Kusanagi Tsuyoshi, have been unveiled.
The plot synopsis is as follows. The Tohoku Shinkansen Hayabusa No. 60 departs from Shin-Aomori, bound for Tokyo. Conductor Takaichi greets passengers as they settle in for the journey. However, a sudden call to the Shinkansen General Operation Control Center changes everything—the caller issues a chilling warning: a bomb has been planted on the train, and if its speed drops below 100 km/h, it will detonate instantly. Along with the threat, the perpetrator demands a ransom of 100 billion yen to disable the explosive. As panic sets in, Takaichi, the passengers, and the railway staff race against time to avert disaster.
The trailer opens with scenes of people boarding the Hayabusa No. 60 with smiles, crew members diligently working to ensure safe operations, and the peaceful presence of the Hayabusa No. 60 as part of everyday life. However, this ordinary day is upended by a phone call warning that a bomb has been planted on the train that has just set off.
As panic spreads among the passengers, a voice rings out, almost as if mocking their fear — the perpetrator demands a ransom of 100 billion yen for the lives of everyone on board. What follows is an unprecedented crisis that engulfs the government, the police, and the entire nation.
Amid the growing terror aboard Hayabusa No. 60, those racing against time to prevent the explosion and prioritize passenger safety above all else are conductor Takaichi (Kusanagi Tsuyoshi), his fellow conductor on board, Fujii (Hosoda Kanata), and the train's driver, Matsumoto (Non).
As panic threatens to overtake the young and inexperienced Fujii, Takaichi meets his gaze with unwavering resolve and firmly reminds him, "The worst thing we can do is lose our cool."
Driven by their pride as railway workers and a sense of justice, Takaichi and his team confront the crisis head-on, working to control the situation and manage the passengers on board. Meanwhile, Matsumoto, holding steadfast to her pride as a train driver, remains focused on maintaining a speed of over 100 km/h while ensuring the train's safety.
Meanwhile, the passengers aboard Hayabusa No. 60 are gripped by the terror of the bomb threat. Among them, a member of the House of Representatives, Kagami (Ono Machiko), and entrepreneur and YouTuber Todoroki (Kaname Jun) raise their voices in distress, while the rest of the passengers, trapped in an extreme situation where the train could explode at any moment, gradually lose their composure.
Meanwhile, leading the rescue efforts for Hayabusa No. 60 is Kasagi (Saitoh Takumi), the chief command officer at the Shinkansen General Operation Control Center. Though stationed in the command room, he works closely with Takaichi and the others onboard, exhausting every possible measure to save the lives of all passengers and crew.
With unprecedented obstacles and time running out, how will this desperate struggle unfold — and what fate awaits the passengers on the speeding train?
Inspired by the 1975 film The Bullet Train, this new adaptation aims to bring the story to life with striking realism, blending cutting-edge VFX with traditional special effects.
This film also marks the first time a Japanese film has featured illustrated artwork by renowned artist Kyle Lambert. The artist shared his inspiration: "When I was a kid, I watched Speed, a film said to have been inspired by the original 1975 The Bullet Train. I vividly remember loving its action and suspense. I created the artwork in my signature realistic style, using vivid and eye-catching colors."
Bullet Train Explosion is coming on April 23, only on Netflix.
