Netflix has commented on the allegations of mistreatment involving background actors on the set of When Life Gives You Tangerines.

On May 28, a Netflix official told Star News, "Netflix continues to strive with Korean production partners to create a better production environment." Regarding the allegations of mistreatment in online posts, they stated, "We are currently verifying the facts of the situation," adding, "After confirming, we will do a thorough review to prevent similar incidents from occurring."

Earlier, allegations of mistreatment on the set of When Life Gives You Tangerines surfaced on X.

The author of the post alleged, "When Life Gives You Tangerines was notorious among the extra actors for its schedules," adding, "They even forced actors to get haircuts."

The netizen continued, "For a Netflix production, nothing was provided at all. The production team was desperately trying to cut costs because they didn't want to spend money on cast members who weren't the main actors. They neglected even the elderly cast members in the cold winter, starving them." "They never provided a tea table or meal truck, and just dumped us somewhere in the food court and told us to eat within 30 minutes.... In the middle of winter, they gave extras their costumes, but the costume team didn't even allow thermal underwear. Even when filming winter scenes, they said things like the fit would get ruined or whatever— like anyone's paying attention to extras in the background anyway, lol. They seriously treat people like slaves." "One day, it was snowing heavily, but we were made to wait outside, and a field actor was the first to step up and bring us over to the heater. It was really the first time I'd seen something like that."

The netizen went on: "This was truly the worst of the worst team. They're number one when it comes to bad schedules. When When Life Gives You Tangerines came out, just seeing the poster made me want to puke."

Another netizen, who went to the set as a bus delivery and maintenance worker, said, "I have a bias because I got involved even with the When Life Gives You Tangerines director." He explained, "He cursed at me, even though it's him who didn't give the cue sign, so I said, 'You didn't give the cue sign,' and he blew up. Since the rental time was already over, I said I couldn't do it without the bus, and until the next day, he went around calling subcontractors, badmouthing me." "They begged me because they were short on people, so I drove for them, but they didn't pay me and just cursed. Who would be okay with that?" He added, "They tried to cut the rental fee, pay less wages, and brush off the overtime pay."

He went on to claim, "There was all-day shooting in Jeonju, all-day shooting in Beolgyo, and nighttime shooting in Andong — three days in a row, all with different buses. They didn't pay for lodging, and for meals, we only got a dinner of a cold hamburger and a can of cola. There was no waiting room, so we were shivering outside for hours in subzero temperatures."

When Life Gives You Tangerines unfolds the story of the rebellious yet endearing Ae Soon (IU) and the diligent Gwan Sik (Park Bo Gum), as they navigate the seasons of life, facing challenges and trials along the way.
