Creator Shin Won Ho of Resident Playbook urges viewers to see the K-drama solely as a drama, separate from social issues, despite the ongoing strike of doctors in South Korea.
On the afternoon of April 10, a press conference for tvN's upcoming weekend drama Resident Playbook was held in Seoul, which was attended by creator Shin Won Ho, director Lee Min Soo, Go Youn Jung, Shin Shi Ah, Kang Yoo Seok, Han Ye Ji, and Jung Joon Won.
Hospital Playlist spinoff, Resident Playbook, is a drama about doctors working at Yulje Hospital, depicting the growth of residents who dream of becoming wise doctors as they navigate their struggles.
Originally planned to air around May last year, Resident Playbook faced delays due to prolonged strikes by medical specialists opposing the government's plan to increase medical school admissions. The K-drama, depicting the struggles and growth of residents, contrasted sharply with the reality specialists are facing, which resulted in the show's premiere delay.
After being in limbo for about a year, Resident Playbook finally confirmed its airing schedule and is now set to premiere on April 12. However, concerns persist if the audience, especially medical specialists, will view the series in a positive light.
Creator and director Shin Won Ho candidly shared his feelings, saying, "Honestly, I was extremely anxious." Director Shin said, "This situation came about when we were in the latter half of filming. We had no idea when it would end — and that's still the case even now," adding, "There was only one thing we were truly worried about: viewers should be able to enjoy the content for what it is. But we were concerned that the beautiful story we prepared about young people might be misinterpreted through a different lens, with different reasons and logic. That's why we kept discussing and gradually postponed the broadcast from what was originally planned for last year."
He continued, "As I always say, our role ends with creating and presenting the work. Watching it — that's entirely up to the viewers. Whether they see it this way or that way, or even tear it apart, all perspectives belong to the audience. All we can do is wait for their judgment."
Director Shin imagined that if he had participated in this project solely as a director, he would have left it at just this level of explanation. However, as the creator — and someone who sees himself as the "guardian" and a "father-like" figure of the drama — he urged with his heartfelt sincerity, saying, "Please, I sincerely hope many people will watch it."
Director Shin said, "The director, writer, and actors are all just starting out. They went through so much, but they created something really beautiful and fun." He went on to say, "But if people end up not watching it because of other reasons, I think that would really break my heart," and added earnestly, "I don't usually make this kind of request when it's my own work. But for this one, I really hope many people will watch it and give it lots of love."
Resident Playbook is set to premiere on April 12. The K-drama will be available to stream on Netflix.
