Director Kim Hyung Joo of The Match, at its press conference held in Seoul, revealed that he did not edit out the lead actor Yoo Ah In's scenes in the K-movie.
The Match tells the story of the legendary Go (baduk) players, Cho Hun Hyun (Lee Byung Hun) and Lee Chang Ho (Yoo Ah In), who go from being a teacher and student, respectively, to rivals. Filming was completed in 2021, and the movie was initially set for a 2023 Netflix release. However, the plan was put on hold after the lead actor, Yoo Ah In, came under investigation for drug abuse. Recently, the decision was made to release the film in theaters instead.
Promotional materials, including posters, have omitted Yoo Ah In's presence while emphasizing Lee Byung Hun. Director Kim explained, "The trailer is exposed to an unspecified large audience, but I thought re-editing the film would disrupt the story's coherence, considering its narrative structure and planning intent."
He continued, "There were structural issues in progressing the story without mentioning Lee Chang Ho [the character played by Yoo Ah In]," adding, "I believe that once the film is released, the audience will fully understand [what I mean]."
He further stated, "Speaking as a director, the film unintentionally wounded before its release, and I didn't want to cause further harm." "I believe it is only right to present the film as it was originally intended."
Director Kim also addressed the shift from a Netflix release to a theatrical premiere, stating, "As you know, deciding on a platform isn't something a director has control over. I believe [it's a matter of] differences in perspective within the business domain."
He added, "From a director's standpoint, I originally prepared the film with a theatrical release in mind, and I'm delighted that it will meet audiences in cinemas, where films truly come to life. I also want to express my gratitude to the many actors and staff who dedicated their time and effort to this project."
Lee Byung Hun shared his thoughts on the K-movie's release, stating, "As someone who loves theater, I'm glad to finally meet the audience despite everything that has happened."
