So, it looks like next year will be my grand attempt at this challenge.

Valid! Curious to follow your progress ^^ I try to make all my challenges with no deadline 'cause that's my preference too and then people can complete them at their own pace. It's the same with the Japanese challenge since that one is also extremely long xD

I personally set myself a probably unrealistic goal to do the RR challenge annually because I do watch a lot of RR content, but I'm still quite a few dramas away from completing it, so I might need to skip a category or two :(

As your resident fairy godparent of RR goodness, I bring you a drama that's battling my RR list for #1 spot.

驸马每天都想和离 / The Prince Consort Can’t Wait to Divorce
Synopsis: On their wedding day, the young city lord, Xiao Mingzhao, donned her armor and went to war, leaving her husband, Lu Yunxuan, alone in their bridal chamber. Yunque City had a long-standing tradition of female dominance, and Lu Yunxuan, beset by this arranged marriage, was determined to get Xiao Mingzhao to divorce him after hearing rumors of her bloodthirstiness, lust, and unattractive appearance. Three years later, Xiao Mingzhao returned victorious, and Lu Yunxuan, captivated by her radiant beauty and spirited nature, gradually fell for her.

I admittedly was a bit disappointed with Her Phoenix Majesty so far, so I decided to try out some vertical dramas to see if I could cheer myself up, and y'all, I was NOT expecting to find my new FAV

I mean... Finally, after so long... a drama that actually commits to the role reversal AND the matriarchy!! With characters that actually feel like they exist in a world where the roles are reversed!!

It's like a body swap drama, but they're in their original bodies! It's everything I could want from an RR matriarchy drama, OHMYGOD!! ML is so FL-coded, feminine and sassy, trying to get his epic wife to divorce him, but she's too smitten with him to ever wanna let him go. She's a warrior princess and he's her consort, like??

Cue ML trying his darnest to be a useless klutz to get that sweet divorce letter, only for FL to fall for him harder. Like girl, if I were married to a sassy femboy, I ain't letting him go either, no matter how clumsy he is.

Seriously, if you love literal role reversal and/or matriarchy dramas, please go watch it! It's only 2 hours and it's SOOOO worth it!!! I am still not done watching, but I'm already obsessed.

I actually can't believe I'm watching TWO matriarchy dramas at the same time... it really be either drowning or dying of thirst, huh? T_T

The drama is very fresh, so it's not on MDL, nor even Douban yet. Once I get more info on it, I'll request it to be added to MDL ^^

I think Flower of Evil is an example of a romance thriller done well

This is my next drama to watch. I kept procrastinating, but now I should see what you speak about.

 Arclei:
Ohhhhhh... that drama XD The matriarchy in that one was sooo underwhelming T_T But kudos to Thailand for even attempting role reversal, lol

For someone like me who like RR very much, It is surprising that I did not watch more matriarchy dramas. But I noticed that it is hard to find them. The audience might not like it that much.

 Arclei:
Highly doubt this ML will be doing anything like that... but possibly another character? O-o I'm curious

I agree, ML will not drug FL with aphrodisiac. I was thinking more about the paramour at the brother who wants to enter the palace so much. Or one of the male consorts. Yes, ML is the kind to use this trick.

 Arclei:
It just feels like we're speedrunning the story xD

They better stop doing that. It feels like a vertical drama. No offence for the "vertical dramas lovers" but I like transitions and story telling.

Interesting. Thank you I jump on it.

It was quite an enjoyable thriller, very suspenseful and interesting story. Hope you like it ^^ It helps that it also has some RR, lol :P

Mixed bag, really. There are the usual "ugh, it's unrealistic and gross" people, but from those who enjoy something different, matriarchy dramas tend to be mostly well-received despite most of them being painfully low-budget. There are a few I can't for the life of me find subbed, but most are available with subs. I tagged all the ones I know about with the Matriarchy tag, though there are two there that idk if they really count. Feel free to ask if you want reccs or just wanna chat, I love blabbering about matriarchies xD

Ohhhhhh, yes, that makes more sense.

As a vertical drama lover, it actually is worse than the average vertical drama xD

I will make sure to check them out. They are few, so that should be easy. Thank you.

You know what. I belive you. Those I watched were choppy. However, I watched 10 mn of "The Prince Consort Can’t Wait to Divorce" and it was not choppy at all and the story goes smoothly. I might have only watched average ones. I guess you were lucky to find good ones.

Eyyyy, how are you liking it?? :D

It's fairly hit or miss with verticals. I have some that I scored a 3 or under even for my updated minidrama rating system, but there are some pretty solid ones out there, and also some very good ones (haven't seen one of those yet, but I've seen quite some solid ones). Basically, it depends, just like it does for regular minidramas, but verticals can be somewhat high quality too, now

 Arclei:

Very much liking it so far. ML is funny, quirky and cute. And I like the cat and mouse game.

 Arclei:

That makes sense. Because I don't see any real directing whatsoever in vertical drama. But this on goes smoothly. I see why now. If you have any recommendation, let me know.

Yay, I'm glad to hear it! It's a very different kinda drama and I'm lowkey obsessed xD

Bet! All have varying degrees of role reversal with decent quality in terms of visuals, story, and acting. Obviously for vertical minidrama standards, but if you liked TPCCWtD, I think you'll like these too ^^

I was gonna recc Phoenix Lord/Feng Jun and Fake Love, but I saw you already watched them and wondered if those were ones you considered choppy/bad, because I thought they were quite good for a vertical minidrama xD Are my standards too low?

驸马每天都想和离 / The Prince Consort Can’t Wait to Divorce

I finished it xD

Though it's not my #1 RR drama, it's really high up there. Might just even go in the #2 slot for the commitment to the matriarchy and creating believable characters in that world (At this point, I doubt The Other Half of Me and You will ever be dethroned from its #1 slot).
It had a few unfortunately traditional takes on certain things, which weren't exactly not-RR but weren't really better thought out either; they were rather brief, so pretty easy to ignore. Yes, I'm talking mostly about the emphasis on ML's bedroom performance... Like I'm not saying women in a patriarchy aren't judged for this, but idk, to me it felt a bit... stupid and male-gazey even  💀  Like woooo, peak masculinity is being large (yknow where) and having stamina, like... *sigh* It's really not as bad as I make it out to be and most folks would probably not notice, but the details matter to me T_T

ML is also FSR, actually, really strong and capable, but like.. They played it somewhat in a quirky uwu kinda way, like how FLs in these types of shows can sometimes be weirdly OP, so whatever. Still didn't make any sense given his character and the setting, but it wasn't the worst. And at least FL is still strong and independent, so it's not like it's at the cost of her agency and strength, so I'll let it slide this time... But like, he picks her up and like... no
I honestly enjoyed it so much. Laughed my butt off and squealed with all the romantic scenes. There were also sooooo many interesting and steamy scenes between them, like, the typa freaky I don't often see, much less in a cdrama O-O
Like ML literally performs a striptease for her, and it's as good as it sounds. My jaw was on the floor

Tell me this GIF isn't giving idol MV [All gifs]
In the realm of shite matriarchy, FLs (yes, I'm looking at you Her Phoenix Majesty and Ye Cheng Fu), this one stands out with a completely smitten and fiercely protective FL that stands for men's rights and men's wrongs. She's a supportive green-flag but in a ML kinda way... I also loved how comfortable ML was in his role as her consort. Like I said, they actually feel like they exist in a matriarchy and thus follow the rules of the universe. Even when he's boybossing, it's not like he becomes a patriarchal man, yknow?
Probably the biggest downside is the lack of decent men in the drama aside from ML. Every major villain is a man, and I just thought it was a bit of a shame that ML deadass has no one to hang out with T_T I would have also liked some more female characters, even as villains, but the focus was admittedly mostly on the leads' romance and them fighting the baddies so...
Last but certainly not least... this diva.

Think courtesan in a brothel, but then make it a man, and you get him. Genuinely never seen a character like him in a drama. The commitment to the performative feminine behavior is next-level, and I loved him. He barely shows up tho, but he's so funny xD

Definitely wasn't expecting to enjoy this drama as much as I did. Highly recommend!
 Arclei:
xD

The ML's face in this gif is sending me XD

but sadly not the ML 😩

Is there a polfie for this drama on MDL? I can't seem to find one.

No, I mentioned in my earlier post that there's no MDL page for it yet since it was released only a few days ago. Once the Douban page is up, I'll request it to be added if it wasn't requested by someone else already, but it has no Douban page either yet, haha xD

 Arclei:

omg it looks so cute, Imma watch it! Too bad it doesn't have a MDL page yet.
