In 1978, he was admitted to the National Theatre. In 1985, he studied directing in the department of television of Beijing Broadcasting Institute. In 1988, he studied at the department of art history at the Free University of West Berlin. In 1990, he studied at the department of drama at the University of Munich. In 1991, he filmed the documentary "Women's Kingdom" for German TV, which recorded the walking marriage system of the Mosuo. In 1992, he studied at the film and television directing department of the Cologne Academy of Film and Television Media Arts, and obtained a master's degree in audiovisual media.
In 1994, he filmed the documentary "Swan of Joy" for German TV, which recorded the festive funeral of the Hani people and describe the concept of death.
In 2003, his first directing work "Blind Well" won two awards, namely the 53rd Berlin International Film Festival Silver Bear Award for Outstanding Artistic Achievement; and the 40th Taiwan Film Golden Horse Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay. Within that year, "Blind Well" also won 13 other international awards, including best film, best director, best literary and best screenplay. Edit Biography
