This. Idk why people are expecting the same emotions that were put through the grinder and broken down over the years. They really don't understand what war and loss does to a person who cherished life and love above all else and it shows. I believe it don't match now because the tingyun who pushed him into this path had different thoughts and priorities than the tingyun now. The old tingyun would've liked the current arrangement. Zhao ling has been walking on a road of no return because the further he goes here, the more dangerous it gets and the more intensely difficult it becomes to return.
But tingyun has been reflecting over and over ever since they had to abruptly separate 5 years ago. Back then she thought about her own position, about mutual success within the system she was from. But after the parting she only regretted they didn't have more time and that she didn't love him the way she now realized she wants to when they still had the chance. She had to grow and realized what was more important to her than anything else.
And now that they reunited she can see how much he's changed and how much pressure he's taking on to continue charging forward, being surrounded by shrewd dangers all around, when all she feels now is worry for his safety and wishing to remain together. It's no longer about reputation, prestige and power for her because she already had her footing in the world.
