The first episode had me thinking that the poor acting of the younger leads might lead to an inferior second season, but, by God, the basterds did it! They stuck the landing with a gold medal finish.
However, where you chose to jail the writers, my inner Legalist already had'em pulled apart. What an absolute waste of an incredible cast. Ahh, the little moments: Lige's introduction, King Peng Cheng balling into the court and glaring at Lu Yuan after surviving the fire, Qing Er's glance at the mirror when she hears that Lige survived her first assassination attempt, The Crown Princess' dignified bearing and, best of all, Consort Sun's chuckles.
Many good memories. Hard to believe that the same team oversaw the clusterfuck it became. Shame!
Tbh, this drama annoys me. I enjoyed the actors doing their thing so much that I am probably fonder of it than my score of 5 would indicate. Yet...yet 90% of events after Lige runs past '4th bro' in the garden made me want to gouge my eyes out.
I assume she took poison and the end scene with her was King Peng Chen hallucinating.
At that point, I was too dead inside to even be outraged. Tbh, I think it was Zhijin's death that made me give up. /Completely unnecessary/.

They should just have made her his sister. Even better, a sister married to the Grand Secretary. It would have tied the plot together better.
King Peng Chen was clearly hallucinating.
Pros: The acting is superb.
Cons: Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, sucks. It takes every flaw of the genre and heightens it to absurd levels.
Run!
I wish that people who leave low scores would take the time to leave a review too though.
Personally, if I like a cast and preliminary skimming checks out. I will watch it.
Rather shocked to discover that shooting ended three years ago.
Mr Kos-Read knows what's up.
