For me, it is hard to put complexity of character in a straight scale. We all came from unique mold that shape our personalities, choices, and thought process. Generally speaking, it is too early to say at this point. I perhaps will revisit this when it finished airing, They gave flashback as to how she would react being questioned. It stems from her past, however, we cannot have flash back for every single reaction that is out of ordinary.
It is always easy to say communication is the key, but in real life, it is not always guaranteed that a person knows how to best deal with a conflict. As you said, the characters do not see what we are seeing. She does not see the ML's staring at her etc. So, while audience may know that he is whipped for her, she may not be too confident about that yet. Sometimes, out interpretation of things also draw from our own experience. I agree with you to some extent; that chess conversation from the beginning could have been used to explain her character. There, she just said no to marriage, but in the book she explains that as a spoiled rich granddaughter who has no business skills at that point, she knows that her role in the future is to be used as a business tool for marriage.
