okay so, this definitely should've been a movie instead. It felt too slow and everything shown in those 8 episodes could be summarized in a 2h movie

I think they wanted to keep the ending realistic. Victims rarely find justice and their trauma is overlooked. The government was behind the Hope Welfare, which means it would take years to get justice and that's if they get it at all.

the abuse explains the murders but it doesn't justify them. Liking the characters doesn't erase the terrible things they did to the innocent people

The thing is Yoonjae didn't murder pedophiles, rapists and child abusers. He killed innocent women that had done nothing to hurt them. Those women didn't deserve to be punished for their parents sins. Yoonjae was a serial killer and Sunghoon was his accomplice. You wouldn't say "free X serial killer". SungHoon and YoonJae deserved to get revenge but murder wasn't necessary, especially the murder of innocent women

She's still his mother, kids tend to ignore their parents wrong-doings. He could be blinding by his love for her. However, he's indeed weak as a king so even if he does know she's evil, he won't do anything. Anyone could dethrone and for that he's LUCKY his mom killed the other princes

The king definitely loved and still loves the Queen. It is possible that they drifted apart because early in his reign he was easily controlled by government officials and they didn't have a son early enough. So Government officials pushed him into getting a Concubine in order to have an heir in case the Queen can't have kids.

It wasn't a dark side. His mother keeps mentioning he could be the next crown prince but he has no wealthy background and is getting bullied by the other princes. He said what he said to stop her from having delusions. Let's be real, the other princes have more chances to become the crown prince and even if Prince Bogeum is chosen, Prince Uiseong won't let that slide. Every Prince knows Prince Uiseong spits venom and is a bully, everyone is trying to avoid his wrath. Only Grand Prince Seongnam can and is willing go against Prince Uiseong. Furthermore, Prince Bogeum did talk back to Prince Uiseong and look at the result. Everyone wants to be the next King, however the other ones won't lose anything if they don't get chosen but Prince Bogeum will have to sacrifice what he has now which isn't a lot. The other princes (except the Grand princes) will bully him until death for even thinking he could be King. Many instances lead to that reaction, it was't a dark side. It was an unfortunate outburst after being pressured
