Its hypocritic, to kill a loyal, hardworking, selfless and strong character on excuse of 'soldier should die in battlefield'. Its supposed to be an adaptation, right? so atleast in drama, they could've done better. Season 2 is a big let down. More than angry, I'm disappointed.

See, *Spoiler* upon Jing saying, XY forgives CX for killing him but XY patience & limit actually broke moment, when she learned about Xiangliu's death. It was her request to CX, to not hurt Xiangliu which CX failed. Xiangliu death hit her too hard. In end, using her lineage magic, XY vanished with Jing towards sea, without telling CX a word in the end.
There's no 9-headed demon guardian angel coming back to save them from any danger for 3rd. time. She definitely not gonna smile carefree same without Xiangliu, man in her eyes, in heart, who she hides in her mirror memory, who she loves making poison for, loves to draw on his face, in end is tragically snatched away by cruel fate, a lesson in life she learned hard.
Honestly, I understand that Jing is much better option for XY but I am still hoping that XL will come to save…
[Spoiler] Originally, before going to battle, Xiangliu did saved Jing & Xiaoyao, but according to leaked script, they changed it, made Jing saved by some pill, instead of XL help.
Drama seem quite rushed with scenes cut & missing. Though, fine, I didn't have much hope, as its adaptation. Maybe they should have ended it at Maze Attack, as technically & logically without Xiangliu, story would have finally ended with dead XiaoYao, comatose Jing and mad in grief CangXuan. That will be 'Eye opening ending' for people who mocks Xiangliu love & sacrifices as nothing. His sole character took most brunt & harm in story.
No offence but Jing chemistry still is frustratingly dull & cringy. Even his plastic face smile is cringy. In season1, production tried to highlight them but didn't left high impression. He's like a rich brother, pitiful clinging to her. So is XinYue. Both are somewhat same.
Trying to watch it from start, Jing character is frustratingly dull, stoic & weak, comparison to others. I have no idea how Zhangwanyi ranks lower than Wei. ZWY performance is better than him. He filmed 4 male leads Tcent dramas back to back from S1. 'Hidden Charm' gonna air next soon.

XL was tired & injured, but CX & his army still fails to win against XL, so they killed him with 1000 arrows.

Yes. Its a Reverse-Harem. CX is is her cousin, also antagonist. She has 2 love interests as snake demon Xiangliu & fox guy Jing. She cares for CX as brother. Jing is rich man but got married (agreed to his family decision). Xiangliu is her soulmate, can't be together as belongs to different sides. So, he hides his loves, protects and teaches her to be strong & safe. In short, at end, when CX kills Jing, XL save him by merpeople help and saves XY by sacrificing his 2nd life, while died in battlefield.
Inbetween dilemma, she already lost a chance to be with Xiangliu, when she decided to be princess (for cousin Xuan), but when she finally realized, she wants to live carefree, strong as WXL, she somewhat knew, that its already too late. In end, even chasing his shadow wouldn't bring nine-headed demon god back.
To be fair, Jing already his made choice, when agreed to his family on name of 'filiel piety'. Her hesitation to marry him for 43 yrs. clearly indicates it. In end, he just is one of companion. Btw, its a fantasy story. In real life, man who is incompetent, pitifully roam around in low-self esteem, lost his worth & wealth, had no chance with women. Infact, honest, loyal, career oriented, strong, fidelity are characteristics that's makes man worthy in life. Author clearly indicated it by her own preference.
Its wonderful whenever Xiang liu appears. His every move & moments are soothing, emotionally impactfull. Tan jianci's every micro-expressions are so beautiful.❤️

He already lost chance when he broke her trust, by agreeing to his family & grandmother on name of 'filiel piety'.
