From what I've gathered or come into conclusion 1) basically the dragon diety is ji ling he just split his soul into two I think ji ling is his childish and just what he longs or want to be since he became a dragon diety with all these responsibilities when he was very young he wasn't able to experience joy fun or love maybe that's why he created ji ling and notice that the dragon diety told ji ling that he's a fox that he saved on the mountains meaning the fox is lu wuyi maybe he saved her back then and if you look at the flashback it all happened in a mountain. 2) because that's his soul I think like part of his soul and the thing he pulled out from him just think of it as a memory card and ji ling as the robot.
