Sorry to disappoint OP but the source material aka the novel, actually has no rich inner world build-up. It was a bland concoction of smut, questionable 2D characters enveloped inside a mascarade of random political intrigue full of plothole, tropey and recycled ideas. It was so difficult for me to complete it.
A multilayered unpredictable plot filled with intrigue, angst and complexity? 🤣

I felt that Deng Ke has specifically chosen him not only for his physical ( for obvious reasons, pun intended) but also to make a point. I think it is their second or third collaboration and I think Deng Ke knows that Peter got shamed/questioned for his age, his look. Facts is that Peter had a successful career already. What situation he hasn't seen yet and or encountered? So by casting him as a young frail handsome scholar given his actual specifications, Deng Ke is making a strong statement.
My production, my script, my vision, my team, my casting choices. ! They know exactly what they wanted to achieve and they delivered!
The juxtaposition of two differents informations shove to our face is great humour. I noticed Deng Ke sence of humour from his other productions. And this one is no different. It's pure comedy. And cleverly displayed at that. The joke is on those who criticize Peter. This irony is pure bliss. Loved it. What a fine coup de théâtre 👏👏👏👏

Yes, all the editing, correction and adjustment so far for Man Man is good.
Because I'm a fan of Lareina so I really hoped that her comeback dramas would deliver. And it did, both for TDHR and this one. Man Man needed to allow Lareina to shine to her full potential. And the storytelling so far allows her whereas in the novel I felt she was a mere vessel or a recipient for Wei Shao lust. I'm really happy with the change.
I would rank her characterisation as #2 since after his display of anger with the painting she didn't smack him to oblivion or something The amnesty was given way too quickly. and Wei Yan as # 1

I'm so happy about all the rewriting and adjustments made from the novel. Screenwriter crew did a good turning it into a watchable drama adaptation.
It would have been such a disappointment to see a production with good potential turned into a disaster.
