No no. Not toxic parents. Actually his dad was a criminal lawyer and he takes on a case which no other lawyer wanted to take on in the city 10 yrs ago. If i remember correctly it was involving a big shot and his dad was the lawyer for the opposite party(some poor guy). His mom didn’t want him to take the case as she knew there would be repercussions. They go through dovorce as they were frequently arguing and neighbours started targeting their family. When it came to custody of children (one each)Huaisong had to leave with his dad to US as Huaishi didn’t want to leave China. Thats also the main reason he doesn't confess to Ruan Yu before they left school. Novel is beautiful. I have to skim thru it again. Think we are around chapter 19/20 as of episode 7/8
