A show so bad, Luo Yunxi owes me financial compensation for getting me into it.
EDIT: I started this series because I'm a fan of Luo Yunxi, I've loved his past series, so I figured this would be a cute watch. It started that way and then halfway through became intolerable to watch. The acting was fine, even though the main pair had very little chemistry by the end of it, but the storyline, the plot, was a complete waste of time. I wish I could surgically remove this show from my brain.
Here are some of the only pros:
- Luo Yunxi
- The two side pairs are cute- though one of them really made me angry at one point that I didn't want them together at all anymore.
- Family and character development
Now for the cons:
- The writing is terrible. They lose complete sight of where the story is going and just repeat arcs with different characters.
- Their villains aren't clever at all, their schemes are idiotic and shouldn't have worked if the writers remembered any of their past storylines and character growth.
- The main pair get neglected for half the series and then are suddenly hit with angst. It got to the point that I stopped rooting for them.
-They completely annihilate any character growth to make their horrible villain arc work and then give that villain a sympathetic death for no reason.
There are so many more cons, but I'm honestly so exhausted from this show. I gave it the benefit of the doubt because I wanted to stick around for the pairings, but I wish I hadn't. A complete waste of time, and my friend and I watched in 2x speed to get it over with.
Here's the thing: This show started out so well-written. It got my friend and I so hooked and invested in the characters and the relationships, especially the character development of Xinbai and Suolou. It was going so well until they killed off a villain duo and then introduced the main villain duo. For one, they already had this dynamic with the past arc and villains. It felt like lazy, pointless writing. And then they add another love interest and antagonist into the mix super late into the show. I liked him as a character at first (not a love interest), but then the writers really messed with his character potential. Had they introduced him before Nanxing and Xinbai were a solid, trusting pair, it could have worked, but they introduced him too late and pushed him as a love interest so hard for no reason. Then, on top of that, they have him and the other two antagonists coming up with pointless, doomed to fail schemes that have no chance of working because the main love pair are so solid in their relationship. So either the writers came up with a useless plot, or their scheme will work and then completely destroy all of the writing and work they put into the series during the last few episodes. It's horrible writing, it really just...falls apart.
On top of that, they've also completely annihilated some of their best characters to make this villain arc even somewhat work. Suolou is so clever and knows about the politics of things, but somehow can't solve her engagement issue when there were obvious solutions right there? And Nanxing as well! She trusts a character that she specifically tells others not to trust an episode prior for no other reason then "she's kind." The writers have completely annihilated their character growth and intelligence in order to make their useless, pointless villain plot work, and it's frustrating. I wish I could quit watching but I'm 33 episodes in and am already invested in the three pairs and want to see how things end with them without this trash Zornia plot. Can't wait to just...be done this show and move on to something more well-written.

So far, so good! Will definitely stay tuned for more.
Whispers of Fate was dropped today and my friend and I immediately jumped onto it after tracking news about it for a long time! We love anything Luo Yunxi usually, so we were so down for this. So far, we are not disappointed. The plot is incredibly intriguing, but also surprising in some areas. My friend and I are usually very good at calling certain twists and pointing out inconsistencies in the plot, but this show has surprised us many times. There are parts in the first few episodes where we we've called it out for not making any sense, or some of the characters' actions being weird, only for the detective character in it to call it out as well. The inconsistencies are on purpose and it gives the audience a sense of being a part of the mystery, like we are the detectives as well. It's very, very cool.
The central characters are great so far. Tang Li Ci is a perfect blend of serious, mysterious, and stoic, but with a playful energy that allows Luo Yunxi to dip into his comedic side a bit. Zhong Chun Ji is a fantastic female character. There's a trope in so many of these shows where the main girl takes forever to figure out someone is corrupt or sus because she's close to that character, but she sees this character do wrong ONCE and figures him out. It was so refreshing to see, and she is consistently clever with her own strengths and endearments. I specifically like her with Miss Shei. They're a sweet duo. Miss Shei is intriguing as well. We haven't fully figured out her character arc yet, but she's already got a voice of her own, which is fantastic. Chi Yun is adorable and, again, comes across as the naive, silly comedic relief, but there's already hints of more to him.
The fighting scenes are, of course, incredible to watch. 8 Stars for plot right now because the exposition at the beginning was tough to follow and got a little confusing, but I assume that's because it's all going to be revealed later on.
The entire show so far is visually stunning. I am so excited to keep watching this show.
