The borderland is basically where people are sent to when their real life body is in a state between life or death (you know when for example someones heart stops beating completely but they can still be revived). If that person gets to escape the borderlands they get to live but if they fail, they die in the real world and if they stay in the borderlands, they get to stay in a coma irl until they die in the borderlands.
