Although I loved Speed and Love but understand why it gave you the ick although ML was never legally adopted by FL's father, the circumstances of the other two are so different.

In Dazzling, the leads' mums were childhood friends and the FL's mother's family took ML's mother in when she was facing some hard times. FL calls her auntie as one does one's mother's dear friend, but there's absolutely no familial relationship and they didn't meet until they were 18 or 19.

In Never-Ending Summer, the FL's mother, who completely abandoned her daughter for 10 years, is one of the ML's father's side chicks and that's exactly how the ML sees her. I also doubt he ever lived with her. He lives in a house that was owned by his late mother and probably lived with his grandpa before that. Neither lead has a relationship with their living parent.

I think that she wants them to do the dirty work to figure out whatever underhanded thing is going on at Shinglin (or whatever it's called) so that ML's firm is disqualified from working on the deal and her firm's hands stay clean. Whatever the deal is, she is definitely a snake.

I agree that it does feel kind of dated, but that doesn't stop me from loving it! Just like I adore 1% of Something.

Since the visit to the father's tomb, I have suspected that SR's father ran him over, but as you say, it could be the grandpa. And is FL's mum the grandmother's daughter from a first marriage? It feels like the grandpa is doing all of this out of love for his wife and not because they share this lost child. Also, is the grandma the asshole CEO's mother or stepmother?

You really should watch Never Ending Summer and Dazzling, though, lol.

There was no adoption of anyone in Dazzling. The FL's family took in the ML's mum for a while when she was struggling. It's a situation like when you call your mother's close friends Auntie because Mrs. X is too formal given the closeness.

The ML in S&L was never formally adopted.
