I just read her interview ,was posted on instagram and some seojun/hiy fanatics are leaving hateful comments for the writer ,which is disgraceful .Too many delusional folks hating a living breathing human being over completely fictitious ,made up characters.
One commenter said "Lee Sieun deserves all the hate". I'm not sure why she gave that interview, but in trying to explain herself she seemed to have further enraged the "mob". she shouldn't have tried to placate the "mob", they will never be satisfied until she writes their own version of the story .
I find it truly astonishing, an extreme unhealthy attachment to fictitious characters.
I'm reminded of the american movie misery where an author is imprisoned by a psychotic fan . Sure we all love certain characters in movies, but when u start wishing hate on the writer,calling on people to boycott her movies,blaming her for all the hurt and pain the fictitious seojun "is still experiencing", then we are wandering into psycho land and folks need to CHILL.

Contrary to what some people think ,drama is based off a webtoon and her love life and makeup skills are really the premise of the webtoon. Character growth is really nil in the webtoon. drama actually does a better job of "love yourself '' than its original source material.

The humor is lost on you .part of the satire is that a skin challenged girl uses makeup and becomes a goddess ,that's the comedy you don't seem to get .While i do think mgy is quite pretty, the idea that her character ju kyeong, becomes unrecognizably beautiful to her bullies with makeup is the punchline.

She's straight tho.

People like you will still be in your echo chamber chanting "cha eunwoo is a very terrible actor" even as he wins his first oscar.

I Never said you must like it, but when you "wondered" why others liked it,i just pointed out that so many other minds don't have to feel like you do.

Arab,Indian and African countries have strict parenting styles and have very very low suicide rates compared to America and East Asian countries. Arab countries also have a lower crime rate than America.

I'm american too but have lived on different continents, so i understand that some of what affects our cultural sensibilities are totally different in other parts of the world. In fact lots of immigrant parents and people from culturally conservative societies view american style parenting as overindulgent with a lack of respect for elders/authorities .
When i see the high crime rates in america compared to places like japan,south korea where kids are brought up to be very respectful and obedient to authority, one has to wonder if american parenting styles are part of the issue.

Legally there is nothing that can be done.A teacher ,friend or close relative can talk to soojin's dad to stop it , but there is no law in korea against slapping your teenage child over school grades. At best suho could have told the teachers or asked his dad to talk to soojins father .
We are talking about a society where Bosses slapping their subordinates at work is still culturally acceptable.
My point been that the original posters comment ,that the drama glossed over it is not reflective of what happens in reality .

It was still a very successful drama by all measures,so it worked .I understand that's your pet peeve but i think the way most aspects of the drama (comedy.character growth,romance, plot,cliches,subplots) were synchronized worked .

But they did show some character growth for all the main actors .
from jk,suho,seojun,jk's mom,hye min,soojin.
remember that the focus of the webtoon is not even character growth but it's really about a girl who navigates life with her makeup skills and her love life.
There is a trend with some kdrama watchers expecting character growth as a major theme in all dramas, but in reality lots of people stay the same or it takes years to make changes in their lives and some dramas are just stories about people's lives, whether good or bad .
I personally don't think every drama must make a judgment call about an issue, otherwise they all become tools for brainwashing. sometimes dramas should just tell a story and let the audience come to their own conclusions.
I wouldn't love jk less if she never went about bare faced, although i love that she stood up to her bullies. Personally i feel that her growth was in standing up to her bullies ,i couldn't care less if she never showed anyone her bare face .

you do know its a romcom not a running commentary on character growth.seems people are asking too much from a high school romcom

In most non western cultures, an 18 yr old female high schooler living at home with her parents is still subservient to her parents .she is not considered a grown woman and it is not seen as terrible abuse. Short of a close family friend or relatives asking him to calm down there are no laws making such acts illegal or punishable.
Therefore the show is somewhat reflective of the culture ,nothing happens to dad.
Basically you are judging it through your american cultural lens . most arab,african and indian or asian cultures do not frown at such discipline.

Ehmmmm......... you do know that it is culturally acceptable to beat your kids in most cultures except western european culture. It is termed parental discipline and the west is actually a recent exception. From a cultural lens, her father slapping her wasn't really a big deal.
Now i personally think it was abusive because she was a top student and there was no need to beat her but lots of koreans spank their kids .
