I felt the same way about how the wife reacted. But her character is very progressive and I think it's very meaningful: It reflects on how queer/gay/lesbian people are forced to conform into heteronormativity in cases such as committing to marriage. And for her to be wholehearedly accepting--albeit not a realistic reaction--speaks volumes on the meaning of accepting queer folks but also the damages from this heteronormativity.
