I really hate myself for watching the 2012 one first but I still love the original 1998 one better. Easily one of the big differences between the two is their cast. The 1998 cast plays their roles better than the 2012 ones especially the kids. I also felt that Sorimachi and Matsushima had way more chemistry together than Akira and Takimoto. I really think that they didn't put much effort into the 2012 cast.
The music between these two was a key difference as well. Sorimachi sings the song "Poison" for the 1998 GTO and they even have a amazing instrumental version of it used in the drama. The 2012 version's music doesn't fit well into a school drama.
I agree with you that the 2012 version has more of a gangster feel to it. The 2012 version, Onizuka fights more than the 1998 version which I dislike because fighting doesn't always solve problems.
I also find it amazing that Sorimachi and Matsushima end up getting married in real life.

Like I can understand Kindaichi getting fired, losing his apartment room, dropping his phone in the river, and having no more money in his wallet but Nikaido and Moai becoming poor right away doesn't make sense. I believe Miracle Thermos had dorms and Nikaido was living in them but when she got fired I assume she was forced to move out but shouldn't she have cash already like in her bank account. Moai had a more higher job role and I assume he was getting paid more money but when he decides to quit and his family dumps him why is he poor? I think his wife and daughter somehow took all his money from him but how? I also want to say that his wife and daughter are really the worst, leaving your husband/father when he quits a job he felt that he was not doing the right thing is a disgrace. Shame on Moai's wife and daughter for dumping him! I understand how Kindaichi becomes poor and homeless but how do these two just suddenly become poor? Its an ok drama. I felt like Mei and Atsushi didn't have enough moments together that later on I didn't care if they ended up or not. There wasn't much chemistry between the two of them. The ending felt lackluster/meh. I say this was more of a family/friendship drama than romance.
