It's all about vibe, you have to get the vibe of this drama. If you don't get the vibe and feel the leader's emotions, you might not like it. Try more episodes or rewatch, until you can feel Yifan'pain and SangYan's deep yearning

If you only watch modern dramas, try Reset, Escape from Trilateral Slopes, Regeneration, I am Nobody and 19th Floor first. They are all excellent.

I agree K dramas have been lacking recently but chinese dramas suck big time. Always the same BS.
Yes, the C idol drama genre is like that. Unfortunately that's the genre the international viewers has access to. None of the highest rated dramas in China is even on my watchlist. Personally I love/prefer dramas with beautiful looking people but definitely not everyone.
