On Usotoki Rhetoric Apr 4, 2025
I loved it!!! I started watching this because of the historical setting (there aren't many Japanese period dramas that are shorter in length), and I didn’t have high expectations, but this! This is the drama I wanted.

Our leads are so charming. They could easily have come off as too mousey (FL) or too shameless (ML), but the actors did an amazing job of making them nuanced, endearing, and easy to root for. The ensemble cast is also great! The best thing about Usotoki Rhetoric, though, is the overall tone of the show. There’s no gore and no over-the-top drama—just good, well-crafted mysteries to be solved. You can rest assured, you won’t be bored. I love classic detective shows, so I was all in :D

And, of course, the production. I imagine this didn't have an exorbitant budget like some other shows, but they really made the most of it. The quaint town of Tsukumoya felt real, warm, and alive. (Honestly, who cares for a big budget if your drama has no soul? It's a waste of money and resources.)

This is a unique and captivating series about the different reasons people lie. There are plenty of fast-paced cop thrillers out there, but I feel like we don’t get shows like Usotoki anymore, which is a shame. For some reason, it reminded me of one of my favorite animes, My Apothecary Diaries, even though there aren’t a lot of similarities between the two when you think about it lol

I'm crossing my fingers for a second season. Like Kinou Nani Tabeta, I could keep watching this for multiple installments. 10/10

I took my sweet time with this one because I didn't want it to end but it still wasn't enough. It feels like I just left ęœ‰é¢Ø小院 and returned to the city, and I miss it. I want to go back to a windy place :(

A drama that came to me at the right time and will stay with me forever. 10/10

One of the best dramas I've ever seen. Beautiful, warm, heartbreaking. A masterclass in storytelling anchored by stellar performances from our main leads Han Suk-kyu and Kim Seo-hyung. 8.4 is a really good rating but almost laughably low when you see some of the dramas people boast about here imo

This is a short series, but it's one you shouldn't binge. Take your time and savor it.

I don't really know what to say about this one. Was it cute? Yes. I especially liked the first few episodes, and it was nice for a weekly watch! I just don't think I would have stuck with it if I had binged it.

I think the actors did a good job, and the drama was well-directed, but the second half felt a bit too draggy and therefore boring to me. Also, I liked the main couple better during the banter phase when they weren't a couple yet and more like platonic friends with a mutual crush šŸ˜… When they finally got together, that effortless romantic chemistry just wasn't there.

Birdie, where did you watch this please ?
Hi, Emma! The series is on GagaOOLala under "What Did You Eat Yesterday?" and they have both seasons, the 2020 New Year's special episode and the 2021 movie. (I'd say the subscription is worth it, you can watch a lot of stuff in a month.)

A lot of Japanese dramas are available through fansubs, but this one isn’t :( That's probably because it has official subtitles on a licensed platform.

I loved it. Healing and comforting but it also "lets your mind wander", as Ha-kyung says. I wish Lee Na-young did more dramas, maybe even a second season of this one... [wishful thinking intensifies]
