honestly I think it started when she helped him out with that freezing hand thing in the middle of court. and even more apparent when in ep9, he willing ask to taste her medicine on his own because he knew how hard she work on it.
he's just a big softly overall when it comes to her.
I love how he let her keep pets because she loves animal.
even bringing her second pet to her so she wouldn't be lonely when she was at that other palace ...or caring for it after when she went to the mortal world... so sweet.
There are some that are unsure about JC love for LX, and how out of the blue it was but I think if you watch it a bit closer, especially his expressions, you'd see that the growth of love was quite natural. He grew to love and care for her because of her sincerity and devotion to him. And perhaps her sweet, care-free, and innocent thinking as well.

when he allow her to keep a pet when she wasn't suppose to, allowing her to make medicine and keep blowing up his palace (and asking her to try the med she worked so hard on, even though it was giant, he still ate it) punishing people who bully her, caring for her injuries. and a lot more.

Really? I Thought that the progression of his love was pretty realistic. Like you said, there were traces and clues through out. He never really outwardly expresses anything in a big way but you can tell he is different with her than he is with anyone else.
