Rewatching this and I noticed so many things about Gu and his wife who passed away. Whenever he thinks about her…
In the last ep the line Gu said to gangsters about not being good at studying has so much more meaning if you understand korean. He basically ended up admitting by the end of the show he was a good student and not a dropout iljin turned gangster like them lool. For Gu to manage the business administration of 3 successful businesses despite being an alcoholic who’s always drunk he has to be really smart, I feel like most viewers looked past this part completely because he wasn’t your stereotypical chaebol in suits character.
My theory about Gu being former athlete who started working in a host bar after injury seems about confirmed after rewatching and noticing small details I didn’t catch on. 1. Gu’s jump and CH saying there’s a short track athlete named Gu Jagyeong 2. Pain relief patches on his back 3. Showcase of back pain and stretching his back during work. There is also some cultural meaning behind it, there is a notion in skorea that athletes have good stamina (read: are good at sex). MJ’s expression after their first night was confirmation lol
Rewatching this and I noticed so many things about Gu and his wife who passed away. Whenever he thinks about her…
In ep 3 when gu said sly men can tell what kind of women they can take money from and screw up has double meaning, he was talking about himself as well because he used to work in a host bar.
Rewatching this and I noticed so many things about Gu and his wife who passed away. Whenever he thinks about her…
In ep 15 gu said he will probably end up homeless and in ep 16 he left the alcohol bottle next to a homeless man and walked away smiling, meaning a happy ending where he finally made the choice to quit alcoholism and won’t end up homeless like he feared.
Rewatching this and I noticed so many things about Gu and his wife who passed away. Whenever he thinks about her…
There’s also parallel between dogs and Gu that’s showed throughout the show. When Gu left the dogs were put into cages and taken away. When he was feeling better and missed drinking soju or two he went to feed to dogs. When Gu talked about what happened to her, he started harming himself. It was symbolic how the dogs were running to bite him apart and he was only saved because MJ saved him.
Rewatching this and I noticed so many things about Gu and his wife who passed away. Whenever he thinks about her he looks into the sky/he looks up. The first time he did this was when MJ asked him to worship her, this explains why he started avoiding MJ in the beginning.
The second time he does this is when he was talking to Baek about her and the last time when he walked for 10km thinking about her. Looking back it all makes sense why Gu’s crashing point was seeing Baek and his gang waiting for him. He realized his wife who committed suicide had no one to depend on beside him, he fell into deep state of quilt and blamed himself for her death. He has no regard for his life and he admits in the last episode he wants to be punished because he doesn’t believe he is worthy of happiness.
Her only family beside gu was her brother and her brother only thought of her death as an opportunity to get more power and money. That’s why Gu was smiling and watching baek with disgust all the time, he loathes him. He even pointed out lack of care baek had for her. “I was waiting with my doors open but you didn’t come” “you were quite after taking over the business” “revenge for your Dongsaeng is bullshit”. He did this again when he went to the nightclub and confronted him but it was very subtle. He mentioned her when he said “when I went to home” and paused to look at baek’s expression, as he expected there was no change in his expression, baek didn’t care about her. Even him threatening baek was a give away, he didn’t want to go back to his old life, he threatened to come back and take over because that’s baek’s priority, not what happened to his little sister.
The only time we heard her voice was when he was running a marathon. The word she used for “human” has a downgrading tone and Gu replied with “you don’t have to pretend to know me as well”. Their relationship didn’t seem healthy at all but her death really ruined him mentally and haunted him for a long time.

The FL “stealing” him from her bestfriend and him ending up cheating on her too is so realistic it’s actually hilarious. I like how none of the characters are saints and are actually well fleshed out with negative qualities each, even if they all annoy me at some points lol
This show has the most interesting portrayal of adultery/cheating I’ve seen in a kdrama. I don’t condemn the ML cheating at all but I ended up actually understanding his actions.
I was looking forward this because of the synopsis but it’s just another makjang soap drama with no substance. When will kdrama writers get tired of writing ridiculous sensationalist chaebol stories for wageslaves to live vicariously through
What was the ending scene of episode 10 about? When mi jeong and mr gu chases after birds on a hill?
My interpretation is that the birds are people from his old life. While they were having fun with MJ the birds (gangsters) found them so in order to protect MJ and her family he returned to his old life. You can see MJ being scared and Gu slightly pushing her back and embracing her to protect her. In the next scene he is back at the nightclub thinking about MJ’s words and wondering whether she considers him an asshole as well. That’s the first thing he asks when they get reunited later on “was I an asshole too?”
I’ve been writing down all little symbols and double meanings while rewatching some parts and ngl it makes me sad sometimes. Rewatching this show doesn’t feel the same as the first time because I see everything in a new light and discoverer so many details and symbolism. I will share some of them once I finish rewatching.
I’m greedy and obviously biased but I wished we could see more of gu’s past, his past as an athlete, his life…
They never firmly “confirmed” it but hinted it the same way they hinted him being an athlete in the past. He didn’t know what worship meant in korean and looked up the translation in english, he used english mid sentences several times because it came to him more naturally than korean, he admitted he was forgetting korean because he hasn’t been using it, the show he watched about the cliff where people commit suicide was American, even in the end he said “me too” instead of using korean.
After rewatching this I’m actually content with the ending
I’m greedy and obviously biased but I wished we could see more of gu’s past, his past as an athlete, his life with his ex wife, his time as a host boy, his background since he’s not native Korean etc. But in a way leaving questions unanswered makes gu what he always have been, mysterious and complex character
