I will say, the book does a good job at explaining Joe’s lack of fighting skills in, you know, a fight. Joe is a trained stunt fighter, not an actual martial artist. It’s more like dancing than fighting. Its choreographed and rehearsed to look like so much deadly force, all while being essentially harmless.

I feel the same about both of your thoughts here. I still believe the plot will reveal itself, and I think Pitch and Gun are meant to be the ship in the end.
