Yeap. Most likely, men were so afraid of the situation in the Tang Dynasty ( female emperor, female officers, powerful princess) reoccuring. They purposely set up a lot of rules under the name of confucious theory to surpress and push down the status of women. The original confucious theory actually does not contain any of these rules about women.

It is not uncommon in the old days. When a girl or women did sth considering sinister or dishonorable, the fast way to settle down the gossip is to send the source of trouble away. These kind of nunneries were build for this purpose, hosting all the 'probmatic' girls or married wemon.

Putting into the nunneries was actually considered generous handling from the 'disgraced' family. It got worse after the Song Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, there was a famous scholar officer. His 5 years old daughter ate some dissert served by a male servant. He blamed his daughter for it and left her starving to death afterwards. Cases like Adultery was normally direct death penalty inside the family. Of course to the outside, she died of some diseases. It was not about right or wrong or education. It was all about the face of the family.

Of course, this applied normally to high social level families only, especially scholar officers. Women in lower class families had a lot more freedom to run around since they have to work like their men to survive. Well, they had no so called honar to protect and were belittled by the scholars class.

If you are looking for green flag ML or FL, look else where. The drama shows us a lot of the gray or even dark side of the life. Both ML and FL are flawed but they are made for each other. The whole process of how they slowly get close to each other physically and mentally is realitic and touching. Not to mention there are so many other memorable side characters who will trigger your all kinds of feelings. I so loved the relationship of the three generations of best girlfriends. So heart warming. I wish I could have such a bestie at the end of my life.

Don't know from when people start to catogorize characters to green flag and red flag. It is so strange to judge a chracter to two extremes while in real life none of us will on these two ends. I know drama is drama but when I see comments about the hates towards FL calling her manipulative, I'm really full of question marks. I found her behavior is totally undertandable in her situation. She needs more help than ML needs to get out of the shadow from the past. Luckily ML is willing to give her more love and has the patience to wait for her to come around. All these does not make her a red flag then ML a gree flag. None of them is. They are both gray characters and good ones for me.

Anyway, it is not a rosy bubbly romance drama. More a realistic slice of life type of drama. For me one of the best in the last few years. Highly recommend. Yeah, it deserves a lot higher rating.

Douban Rating 7.7!!!! Very good for a modern romance cdrama. Normally most these type of cdrama stays at the range of 6.0-7.5 on Douban.

I read from Little Red Book (Instagram of China), that the drama is way better than the novel, which reads like a soft porn. A lot of bed scenes, ML and FL talk with F words all the time, etc. Maybe the only drama where every related comment online I saw about the comparision with the original novel praises the adaptation of the script writer. :-D

You are welcome. Actually he has another 2017 drama, Tientsin Mystric, which was very well received in China. He caught some attention with Dr. Qin. But this mystry plus case investigation drama really made him shine.

He had one not so successful costume drama a few years ago. Therefore a lot of people say he is only suitable for modern dramas. But he has one costume drama on shooting, co-starring Yan Zi again. From the promotion materials and leaked photos, it looks very well crafted and of high quantity. So maybe a view changer drama is coming.

Most people would recommend Meet Yourself for your next watch of Li Xian dramas. I like it a lot too. But i got to know Li Xian from Medical Examinar Dr. Qin. It's a short web crime drama, co-starring Zhang Ruo Yun, Jiao Jun Yan. Yes, Zhang Ruo Yun. It was a drama when he and Li Xiao both were not so wellknown and a bit green. But both of them already show good acting here. Not to mention, FL is one of the best written female character in cdrama land, smart, kind, fun. The dynamic among the tio (colleagues and friends) is amazing. Only some scenes were a bit uncomfortable due to the nature of the drama.

The fun fact is that Dr. Qin was made into multiple drama series with different production teams and casts, which is normal in cdrama and Zhou Yu Tong was in one of such series and she played the same role as Li Xian. In the serie with Zhang Ruo Yun as Dr. Qin, Li Xian played Caption Lin, Jiao Jun Yan played Da Bao, the assistant to Dr Qin, who in the original novel is a man but somehow changed to female in the drama. After the serie was well received, people think it was a good idea, so in the serie where ZYT was in, they made her character to female. Hahahaha. Anyway, it was a good watch for me, the script is solid, the tio is absolutely adorable. Short, fast paced. Every two eps one case solved. One reminder, don't watch it while eating.

Infrastructure weise is absolutely correct. China has the largest and longest high speed train network in the world. It does not only connect the major big cities, but also down to the 5-tier small cities and towns. Small villages are still not in the scope but there are most likely local bus networks radiated from the train station in the nearest town or city. My grandparents used to live in such small city. After the train station was build, it took us less than 1 hour instead of 6 hours coach ride from the big city to pay the visit to their tombs.

Life in small cities and town is a lot low paced and peaceful like shown in the drama (maybe idealized a bit but generally similar) but in bigger cites is really stressful and highly competitive to survice and the living cost is also high. So now there are more and more young people are going back to their hometown. Thanks for the convinient train network and online selling platforms, there are more oppotinities in the small cities than before but of course overall if you are striking for a bigger career, better medical treatment, better education for your kids, big cities are still your No. 1 choice.

It is about time for such big conflicts. FL acts very realistically. How many times in your life you lashed out some words in some emotional moments, hurt the people you loved or loved you, then regret it deeply for long. The ironic thing is that, the deeper the bond is, the easier these words come out your mouth. This is that kind of moment for FL and ML. Their relationship has already developed to this point.

I think there is the reveal of FL's underthinking in Ep16, very touching. It's drama. They like to put you into angst first, then the reveal later. :-)

Yes, They are not playing with each other. They are totally into each other but with a clear concious about the difficuty ahead. The torn and struggling is real. The best part of the drama is that it depicts nuancedly this process. The end is either they find a compromise or reach a total break up. Of course I hope for the first one but life is life, you never know.

The whole concept of the drama is about a group of people on the road. The production team mentioned that they are making a road movie type of drama with a historical background. The destination means the end of the drama. You can tell from the name of the drama.

Cnetizen praise ZWY for his line delivery a lot because he could do well even in a historical/period drama. In general, line delivery in these dramas are considered more challenging than in dramas with modern settings.

Traditional Chinese is way more compact and poetic than modern everyday Chinese. Anybody with experience of old Chinese literature, poems and essays should know what I mean. Most scriptwriters of a historical drama will make the lines more close to the old Chinese.

It is like Shakespeare dramas. You can't just plainly read the words out. There is certain melody and rhythm which makes you sound like you are from the old era. Only British can tell who is a better Shakespeare actor. It is subtle, but same here. That's why there is so many dubbing in the history/period/fantasy cdramas. The dubbing in modern cdramas are way less than those genres. The production team will make the decision if you meet the standard. If not, dubbing is inevitable. Of course, there are definitely other reasons for dubbing like budget or schedule.

Line delivery is only one part. The other part is that you have to give this aura of an ancient man, which means a lot more composed, with more tightened posture. ZWY is praised a lot for this. Another actor, who is well-known for his charming bearing in period dramas, is Chen XingXu. His role of Li ChengYin in Goodbye My Princess is considered iconic. The famous joke on Bilibili is that Li ChengYin is on duty there 365. Nearly every day there is at least one video about him, especially when there is a new historical drama coming out, there will be definitely videos comparing the ML with Li ChengYin about posture. With ZWYs popularity on Bibilibi now, the current tease is ZWY is about to join this 365 duty line with Chen XingXu.

It depends on the social platforms. Each platform in China, mainly, Weibo, Bilibili, Douyin, Little Red Book has different taste tendency. A far as I collect, ZWY is extremely hot on Bilibili. So many video clips, fmv about him and his acting. Weibo not so much, they favor TJC and DW. But again, still a lot of fans in China praises his acting on Weibo too. Just not that much to get to the hot search. Weibo hot search is kind of fund based. A lot of manipulations there, including the streaming platforms themselves. During the airing, they will pay a lot to make hot searches to direct the focus of the audience. Clearly, Tencent decided to make a promotion focus on the romance side, the reverse harem, since it is easier to attract young female audience with these storylines and create heat discussion. You can't say they are wrong, at least they got what they want from the drama. Since ZWY is more on the political storyline, his part is not so much in the promotion. A pity for him.

They both graduated from the Central Academy of Drama, another prestigious film school in China. Their BTS and interview has the similar vibe.

Watch the viki version. In their ep 22 and ep 23, there are a lot of added scenes about Gu Ran and Jiang Jia, which are deleted in the official youku version. Their story is much more complete there. The downside is: First they don't have subtitles; Second, they end the whole drama at the wedding. All scenes of the marriage life of the main leads are deleted, which makes the ending very rushed.
