I dislike the ending so much I’m just going to have my own interpretation of it. I’m just going to assume that there was no transmigration and there was a real SSG who was engaged and married to LY, and she and her family died in a fire. Overcome with grief, LY imagined this story about her in the hopes that he will meet her again in the future. His enduring love and hope transformed into a spirit in the form of the butterfly and when BOTH Lin Yan and SSG reincarnated thousand years later, the butterfly reminded them of their everlasting love. So when they woke up they “found” each other again. For me, this feels more digestible and less unfair to LY. After all, in life our loved ones can die anytime and there is no guaranty that they will live a long time with us. They could die of an accident or illness. So to me, at least this makes me feel like less unfair and just an inevitable part of life. Sad but less unfair to LY.
They only get together in episode 31. Before that, only 2 kisses, but she considers it a "sin" because…
See, I just don’t get it. Why do Cdrama writers and directors insist on shoving their sweet moments in one episode, and then rushing the ending? It’s like they spent all this time building up to what the audience expects to be a relief when the main couple finally get together. But it’s always a let down because they focus more on the buildup but then they just wrap up and finish it so quickly. What was the waiting worth? There were so many episodes that could have been shortened to add in at least one or two more episodes of their happy relationship. It’s like you building up for a big birthday party for weeks, planning and waiting and ordering the food, buying the presents, decorating, inviting friends and all of the anticipation. But the party ends up being rushed and finished in 10 minutes. How would you feel? The point is that we want to enjoy all the buildup that was made, to see the results of the buildup and revel in that.
To me, it’s not the best ending. It’s kind of not fair to Lin Yan right? He is the only one who reincarnated. She is the same person. LY is the only one who had to live out the rest of his life alone, remembering what he once had and lost - he himself said that it’s sadder to have and lost then to never have had at all. I say this again, reincarnation is not the same as the actual person. Here, SSG is the same person and LY is a reincarnation. It doesn’t matter whether he remembers his “past life.” For SSG it’s not a past life but an actual real life that she lived and loved through but for LY it’s just a memory of something that didn’t actually happen to him because he is a reincarnation. Seems kind of unfair and wasn’t necessary.
They could have lived a long happy life in ancient times and found each other again after they both reincarnated. Love that transcends time isn’t beautiful only just because somebody suffers and is tragic. It can be just as beautiful if they’ve overcome hardship together, lived and loved together for a long time with happiness. To me, that type of love is just as beautiful. Cdrama writers need to get out of this tragedy mindset. This is why their endings always suck.
The angst in this drama is driving me back to finish watching Fated Hearts. At least they have a true happy ending. 😂 Ironic since I stopped watching Fated Hearts bc it was too much drama.
I think the reason for the low viewership is bc their main promo poster and the title sucks. Who came up with the title? Except for the first 12 episodes or so there hasn’t been a lot of emphasis on food. Which is fine. They should have picked a better less silly title bc the drama overall is not that silly.
I feel like a lot of people are forgetting that this is, at its core, a family drama centered around the women…
It’s not that we’re complaining that it contains story about the family. I don’t mind having the family story. It was good in the beginning. But they didn’t do anything with the story. For example. The parents clearly have a problem but they keep going back to the same problem without any resolution. The mom doesn’t communicate well at all and she just keeps getting mad at the dad and the dad feels under appreciated. There has been no progress, no arc in their story. At ep 27 they’re still the same! The brother, they had a chance to allow him to become a better person than who he was in the past/future but they squandered that opportunity and made it into a comedy and let him just escape and leave home. Having a family drama is fine but we’re complaining because the writing is terrible and the sub-plot of the family has not made any advancements in themselves or even in the narrative of the story. As a writer, you always have to ask why is the character there and what are they doing to move the main plot along? You can’t answer that question for the family after like episode 17. They’re just there. That’s poor writing and is not fun to watch. That’s what the complaint is about.
They will finally get married (first link, from 033"), but their happiness will be brief . SSG will return…
I disagree. A reincarnation is not the same as the person LY and SSG actually fell in love with. A reincarnation is a totally different person. So SSG just falls in love with a totally different person who looks like LY in the future. How is that a “reunion.” The use of a reincarnation trophe is lazy writing. Also, why can’t the Shen family live in the Tang era. Why is there a rule against that? They seem to be happier in the Tang era. They are successful, have good friends, and they even have a good school for YY. So why do they have to go back? Who says the future era is safer and better? For the Shen family we clearly saw that they were settled and happier in the Tang era. I think that’s the Cdrama messaging they want to push on the viewers, “oh look the future China is a better place to be” but I totally disagree.

I hate these “reincarnation” endings. A reincarnated person is not the same as the original Lin Yan SSG fell in love with. Why do writers insist on this BS writing. It feels like lazy writing to me, just an easy way to do a quick HE instead of thinking through an actual good ending. In the novel, I read that they love in the Tang era for a long time and have kids and are happy. Why couldn’t they do that ending. Why do we always end up with the “reincarnation” reunion in the last 30 seconds of the last episode. It’s ver cliche and not satisfying. They wasted so many good episodes on the parents’ story that didn’t even progress into anything and will give us such a lame ending. It’s so annoying when you’ve spent time watching the whole series to be given such a thoughtless, cliche, and lazy ending. The writers and the director needs to be fired.
Better than LY and SSG being happy in the Tang era is that they'll be much happier in the future, with the prospect…
I prefer them to be happy in the Tang era. They’re all much happier and Lin Yan doesn’t technically exist in the future. And I don’t want to see a “happy ending” with a future reincarnated Lin Yan. A reincarnation is a cop out. She fell in love with Lin Yan from Tang dynasty not another Lin Yan from future or otherwise. I hate when writers use that future trophe to get out of writing a decent ending for their characters. It’s lazy.
Hmm why didnt ML question FL and her family how they knew his past and secrets...isnt that obvious question, since…
I agree, was wondering the same thing. Why isn’t he asking how she knew his details if they aren’t engaged. He could tell she likes him so why isn’t he asking more questions? Is it because he is a “gentleman” and it’s clear she is rejecting him and he doesn’t want to push the issue? But that doesn’t justify his anger at them. He did say he isn’t blind and could see that they were genuine to him so why can’t he ask why they truly lied when they are so genuine and caring towards him. It doesn’t seem very much like his character to be like this. I do think this is a huge miss by the writers. Or they thought they had 36 episodes instead of 32 and a lot of it has been edited out.
I just saw the previews for Ep 29 and they still haven’t figured out he’s not the ancestor! There’s only 3 episodes left after that. They wasted so many episodes on nonsense and they’re just going to rush the ending like all these Cdrama do. It’s so frustrating.
They need to limit so much time on the parents story. I get that this is a story about the whole family but to spend that much time on the parents whining and fighting with each other WITH NO PROGRESS just feels like filler. They could devote more of that time to the ML and FL but they chose to waste it on repeated nonsense. I mean the mother is such a flat character. She has no arc, no improvement, nothing. I’m at Ep 24 and enough already. It’s like the director and writers are just amateur and don’t know how to put together a proper drama. This drama started so strong and so good in many ways. At this critical mid-point they’re just wasting all their time with boring nonsense. I feel bad for LYR and WYL who have great chemistry and have done a phenomenal job with the acting. It’s like their own director and writers are sabotaging and ruining this otherwise great drama.
I’m up to ep 24 and I’m not saying they should have cut out the storyline with the parents or other stuff…
I agree, I don’t know why Cdrama always waste middle episodes with BS that doesn’t advance the plot of the ML and FL stories. I can just imagine that they’ll waste all theses episodes with nonsense and then all of a sudden in Ep 30 they’ll rush to resolve everything and devote about 30 seconds to the final ending where the viewers don’t feel much satisfaction or closure in the ending. I fear that’s what will happen. This type of pacing and story telling always plague Cdramas. You would think that they would learn but it’s like they insist on this nonsense. This is why Cdramas don’t get the wide accolades and fan following that they should get. They usually have great stories, characters and actors but the directors and writers usually get crazy at the end and lose their mind towards the last 10 episodes and mess up everything they built. Always feels like self-sabotage.
This drama is from the writers of “New Life Begins” which I loved. I thought it had a similar vibe. No wonder I’m really enjoying it. I do wish the ancestor reveal happens soon tho. And I hope they spend time on a good solid complete happy ending and not some BS like they’ve been doing where the ML and FL get their reunion and then the drama ends.

otherwise great drama.
