Superb acting by all actors involved in this production!!! The story is simple but it gives you something to think and the simple cinematography became the strength of this movie - it was almost like you watched an indie movie. I love this!!
LOL falling off cliffs seems like a recreational activity in c-dramaland... Like does anyone ever hit the ground?…
Sadly even in China, this WOH cliff scene got bashed, mostly by young certain BL adaptation fans. It's the evidence that even in China wuxia genre can't touch young audience or this might also served as evidence how fans operating like a cult causing toxic internet culture.
Haiyoh - is there any costume c-drama (whether full-on wuxia or even with just a teeny smidgeon of wuxia) out…
Sadly yes, Word of Honor got randomly accused of plagiarizing other BL adaptation dramas that came before it (even though there is nothing similar) - by many (some are new viewers who came to c-dramaland because of certain BL drama adaptation) because of that particular scene. Also many of international fans especially the one who came to c-dramaland after one or two drama got confused about the genre. I get it thou! Because somehow in their mind all martial art movies are the same, LOL!
Everyday I come to check rating here but it is to no avail
I believe DB rating more when it comes to c-drama compare to MDL.
One thing I notice, I see here the audience demographic is younger compare to WOH audience in China. It's perhaps affecting how you are rating the show. Also many international audience watched c-drama recently because of certain BL drama adaptation previously so, I think their understanding about wuxia genre is lacking.
To add, SHL is not idol-turns-into-actor drama so, it's understandable that international fans might not be familiar with their faces. Also I see the prejudice happened within international c-drama community especially the one who is recently into c-drama because of certain previous BL drama adaptation. I see they didn't watch the drama but giving the score low everywhere just because.
I hope fans will educate themselves and not to compare the treatment between WOH and certain previous BL adaptation drama with Xianxia genre. The most stupid comparison imho is: WOH copying certain previous BL adaptation drama "falling from cliff" scene while the scene like this is always there since Jinyong era! LOL!!
I love how Youku keeps dropping all these easter eggs in the Taiwan and international versions of Word of Honor.https://twitter.com/zhngzhehan/status/1385105950747463682
They are not letting us go down from the Mountain hahahaha
Does anyone know why ZZH period drama with WJY "Zhao Ge" is still not aired until now?
Some said about historical accuracy and some said about the scriptwriter/producer doing something illegal as well that's affecting the contents he produced TT TT
I agree with you because for me WOH is not merely just BL drama, WOH also not romance type drama or bromance like…
HAHAHA!!! Romeo and Juliet is standard for all romance tragedy, it's true tho! Yes, agree with you that dying part is too Romeo and Juliet-ish. It's necessary perhaps to drive the plot but the execution isn't done well and it seemed like (not) lazy writing but too fast. We should see better storyline and execution than that.
Another thing, yes, true WOH initially was promoted as part of Dangai 1O1 because the original source is Danmei - and the conversation in social media also talking about this Danmei. People came initially for Danmei-ish element, but as the story goes also heavy wuxia element injected in the story, I think people around me even it's passer by and casual drama watchers started to watch. One funny comment I found in social media from a passerby watching episode 30, they said WOH/SHL is martial arts but all males, where's the female here? LOL!!
I read one or two comments asking if this is bl or saying they'd rather watch 'bromance'...I would like to ask…
I agree with you because for me WOH is not merely just BL drama, WOH also not romance type drama or bromance like you said. For me WOH presents loyalty, heroic nationalism (right and wrong also grey and redemption), and recognition of worth - 知己 (zhī jǐ) in unique ways with wuxia genre. This is I think the reason why many of you said "why SHL is passing the censorship". I see the directors and producer cleverly utilized this marginalized genre, including links to historical story and heroic nationalism to avoid strict censorship. Everything is cleverly crafted as metaphor using old poetry which can be interpreted to many things.
True, the original story "TYK" is m/m romance and there's certain sex scene involved but when it's translated to live adaptation "romance relationship" is replaced by "知己 (zhī jǐ)" which is Youku translated as soulmate. This translation is blurring the original meaning of 知己 (zhī jǐ) - because in wuxia world it's known as " recognition of worth". I understand that mandarin is hard to interpret sometimes in English. "知己 (zhī jǐ)" is not talking solely about romance. Remember in episode 9 or 10 when ZZS talking about Four Sages of Anji? There he talked about how those 4 person found their 知己 (zhī jǐ) because of the same belief - of justice. 知己 (zhī jǐ) isn't just romantic relationship here, but it's more than that. In wuxia world, being one's 知己 (zhī jǐ) means you understand your partner better than anyone, you value your partner's worth and you will die for them - just like ZZS do in episode 32.
Labelling WOH/SHL as JUST BL drama and romance IMHO is degrading the story and if you check the tag in Chinese review site, douban, WOH is tagged as 剧情 / 武侠 / 古装 (story/martial arts/costume drama) which is based from original works Tian Ya Ke by Priest.
We know that Zhang Zhehan was initially interested in playing Wen Kexing. Here's a clip where we can get a glimpse…
The producer is right when they refused ZZH request to act as WKX, ZZS is ZZH and I don't think GJ will bring out the ZZS character well if the role is reversed. Also SHL narrative from the start is built on ZZS story and ZZS journey, so basically it's ZZS character being the foundation of this drama just like what the producer said. The producer also said if they fail to get the right person who would play ZZS, then the entire drama is done.
But I get it why ZZH wanted to play WKX, because to understand ZZS people should dig more. ZZS is the character with thousand layers - they said and it's hard to interpret. While WKX, the character is pretty much in-your-face type with many expressions, it's easier for people to understand and to get entertain from it. For ZZH who played aloof male character in his previous drama projects , WKX character is surely interesting.
I admit, when I first watched WOH, WKX character is what make me watch it however as the drama progress, I love ZZS character even more.
Monday and Tuesday is disaster day in my office and I'm not sure I can watch it live TT TT
