Well, by design, the character was meant to stick out like a sore thumb. They needed that contrast to play into the dynamic. This doesn't change much later on throughout the drama, in case you want to continue.
It was too vanilla, plain and got borderline stale halfway through. It needed a little kick to shake things up or at least cut its runtime a little bit. All the problems/steps were pretty obvious and were handled as predictably as possible. Nonetheless, it remained inoffensive and passable.
