*The Double had a short broadcast period as Youku locked 18 episodes under VIP sooner than other shows (prioritising getting subscribers instead.)

??? a user posted something cryptic, another user asked what's going on and I explained. I've just been following the metrics because I'm curious to see if The Double becomes Youku's most watched show.

There've always been rumors about his age being fake. I believe his drama school teacher commented and refuted them (last year?) but well, they're determined to hate him over this so they're looking for any and all reasons to attack him. It's a lot of screaming over nothing. (Rachel McAdams lied about her age and it doesn't make her less of an actress.) But yeah, I do hope WXY has a good support system because it's relentless and sickening what they're doing.

I'm not talking about weibo followers, I'm talking about episode playback data which is what determines whether the show is a hit. The Double reached 50M/ep so it's a certified hit already but the user above was hoping it would reach 60M/ep by now.

The user above used the term "old boy" which is the nickname they're calling WXY in Douban (because they believe he's lying about his age.) I don't visit Weibo so it's nice to hear that he isn't being bombarded over there but I've been hanging out in the Douban ratings group the past few days and clicked on this show's Douban group and was surprised at all the hate posts and ugly things they're calling him. You'd think he killed a puppy! (Meanwhile, the saner people at the ratings group are just saying that this is just the normal trajectory for Yu Zheng productions.)

edit for additional context: the playback volume went from 5000 to 3000 in around 3 days which is a steep drop for something that just ended.

yes the playback data is for China only. International viewers don't care about this "scandal." I'm not sure if the 6 episode per week release in most countries will help it trend on Netlix though but we'll see.

popularity in china is decreasing fast based on playback data (fans were hoping it would reach 60M/episode but it's trending down so probably not). they seem to be blaming WXY for releasing that clip. but if the "fans" didn't overreact in the first place then it wouldn't be a big deal? seriously the douban group is pages and pages of vitriol so they're the ones to blame for all the negativity.

yes I know about the novel ending but I still don't know why people are mad about a possibility that we didn't actually get. the production team changed their minds so it's not a big deal. or maybe i'm just used to my low expectations of cdramas and their rushed endings so it doesn't really bother me.

what story logic? xff gets poisoned, hit in the head, buried alive, magically survives and it's never explained how. so i don't get why it's suddenly against consistency for him to survive the battle. it's even shown in the previous battle that when he kills the commander everyone stops fighting. duke su can fly so maybe he looked up at the clouds and whooshed away (tongue in cheek joke but still...) I enjoyed the show a lot but it was never serious about logic.

Does the timeline even matter? whenever they changed their minds, they changed it and the happy ending is canon. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was also supposed to have a depressing ending but the director decided on a hopeful one instead. It happens all the time, I don't get why it's a problem.

I feel like this timeline is wrong because I remember WXY was giving interviews way before they shot the extra scenes where he was hinting at a happy ending so they probably changed their minds before it became a hit. Movies and TV shows write/shoot alternate endings all the time. The real ending is the ending we already got.
