She was there when he learned about the secret wedding date, and she saw how his first reaction was towards his dad, not to her. She might as well have been invisible.

Shin Yu isn't surprised about his dad secretly setting the wedding date behind his back, just upset and resigned. He never behaves like the relationship is primarily between him and Na Yeon, like a normal BF&GF - it's more a convenient family/political arrangement, and he's just a pawn. (Maybe his dad also wants to ensure a grandson to secure the family lineage in case The Curse activates and Shin Yu dies early.)
That's why Shin Yu doesn't act like a devoted lover towards NY, or initiate any skinship or closeness, but he doesn't completely rebuff her advances either. On some level he probably knows she's being clingy cos she's possessive/territorial, not cos she really loves him, but he puts a lot of weight on his family obligations, so he's not about to rock the boat. And there's no need to, since he believes the Spell is just temporary.
Same for his job too. He's smart and talented but bored. He doesn't need to work, and comes to work for Onju City Hall on a whim, to teach Haum a lesson. (ofc, in a teeny hidden corner of his mind, maybe he was counting on running into HJ ...)

yes, Hong Jo is very grounded and realistic and self-sufficient - she had to be to survive this far. She didn't believe in miracles or spells, but she took a real liking to the Shaman Granny and thought she wouldn't have given her anything really harmful, and to cap it off, her landlady JUST SO HAPPENED to send her a bottle of goat milk needed for the Love Spell ...!!!

i mean, i know Shin Yu's been pining the whole episode, and ready to explode. If he was MELTING me with his straightforward expressions of love so far, this episode he was just LOOKING from afar, and that was far more intense and heartbreaking!!
So he could have been pushed over the edge because he's been fighting all these external forces and fighting himself as well, and being anxious about HJ's stalker.
Plus HJ let a lot of things slip, adding fuel to the flames - like how she'd been unconsciously waiting for his calls/texts, and her disappointed reaction to her name being saved merely as "civil servant" on his phone showing that she wanted to be special to him (actually, I think he did a decent thing by saving her name like that - a nickname implies familiarity, putting her actual name risks exposure to Na Yeon and other outsiders, and he was trying to keep his distance for both their sakes because their connection was "solely" because of the spell).
It was also poignant that he KNEW what HJ's reaction would be and didn't want to hurt her, so he tried to keep her from seeing his phone. They really are in sync and well-matched, but all the circumstantial evidence is just cluttering up the way!!

I think the spells DO work objectively - e.g. at the eco event, cutie Lawyer Park (is he a lawyer too, or an assistant to Shin Yu? i'm not sure) remarked that Hong Jo looks "prettier than usual" and commented that her skin looked especially nice.
So the spells do have a noticeable effect, but since Shin Yu and Jae Kyung were already into her, they wouldn't be able to discern any change! And Hong Jo was counting on the spell to stop her uncontrollable blushing, but that's not how the spell works, apparently!
At some point, she'll just have to go for the Pregnancy Spell to test once and for all whether it really works 🤣🤪
But didn't the book say that trying to undo a spell would bring disaster? I'm not seeing the consequences of that yet ...?

It's kinda realistic and understandable - I guess from their perspective, if a pretty young hardworking colleague transferred into their dept one day, they'd be feeling super jealous and worried about their workplace eligibility rankings, and anxious to prove they "belong" there more than she does (and spending more energy on that than actually doing their work).
Doesn't excuse their attitude - but since they're slowly warming up to her and finding things to like about her, I'll take these crumbs in the name of female solidarity!
I'm hoping it will rapidly develop into an "only we can bully her, but no-one else can!" type of sisterhood - or am I hoping for too much?!
