I read somewhere that modc actually based on novel with the same name and that novel also have the same ending but it ended with hao ting remembering his memories with xi gu inside his car in that traffic light, and that actually there's only 1 couple in modc (please correct me if i'm wrong) but the novel had an alternate ending where xi gu survived the accident and hao ting had a nightmare about that accident, the went to college being a lovely domestic couple and they both went to himalaya then hao ting propose to xi gu and they got married

Yes, the scriptwriter confirmed hao ting suicide on line tv interview after the finale episode she said for hao ting xi gu is his one and only love even after 6 years he still can't move on and griefing over his death so hao ting went to himalaya to 'meet' xi gu
