I agree with you. Besides romance, I love the friendship theme in TLI. The F4 have a special place in my heart. I love how they grow and mature over time even with heavy burden on their shoulders as the heads of their clans. TLI is definitely worth it, I love it a lot and have watched it 3x even though I'm not fond of Xianxia genre. I believe it deserves higher rating than 8.3, this is a drama that stayed with me after watching it the first time and was even better on rewatch.
I still cry no matter how many times I've watched the angst scene in ep 25. It's my favorite scene of TLI, Wang Anyu and Zhao Lusi did a phenomenal job conveying the emotion.

I'm going to watch the whole series the third time. There're very few k/cdramas that I've rewatched these many times. And Xianxia is not even my favorite genre. Like you, I've thought about what is so appealing about TLI that it stays with me after I finished watching it the first time, and had to rewatch. The love story between Ayin and Gujin is the highlight for me, I love how pure and innocent their love is (before reality hit and the adults get involved). The friendship theme is another. I actually love everything about TLI...lol
