Watching episode 1 and I can’t help but notice that Mun (presented as a poor kid) is wearing a Burberry shirt...smh
lmao it's always like that... people are supposed to be poor but wearing luxury items from head to toe. marketing departaments can't be stopped in kdramas

She probably survived, as there was no coffin or dead body scene. Or maybe she's dead and Jia is gonna be playing her twin with a butterfly tattoo or some crazy stuff like that. Also, we'll have a timeskip now, right? Can't wait to see all the kids going mad in season 2! The possibilities are endless

I don't really think she killed min seol ah, but she will probably turn evil for quite some time thinking she did. Then there'll be a twist later on or something. I still think it was one of the kids or the maid

Was reading about that song "Queen of night aria" by Mozart (yes, THAT opera song that plays all the time...)…
a short summary from the wikipedia article: "Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen" ("Hell's vengeance boils in my heart"), commonly abbreviated "Der Hölle Rache", is an aria sung by the Queen of the Night, a coloratura soprano part, in the second act of Mozart's opera The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte). It depicts a fit of vengeful rage in which the Queen of the Night places a knife into the hand of her daughter Pamina and exhorts her to assassinate Sarastro, the Queen's rival, else she will disown and curse Pamina.

Music suits the drama concept very well for me. It sounds really old korean-folky, and well, we have this drama about this middle-aged dude trying to start again as a reporter. It also brings back those Shin Won Ho human drama feels for me. This idea was made even more clear for me when, in ep 4, they played that old-school song(I'm pretty sure it's not an OST, I might be wrong though) while Jun Hyuk wrote the message.

Just a short reminder for anyone coming up with theories about this drama: the korean title means night and day(the poster too, reflects that).

It's not the most fantastic drama ever, for sure. But it's pretty consistent at what it does - and I can't help but enjoy the production. Those big logos are so cool when compared with what you get in most dramas lol

I'm truly baffled! Is something wrong with this sites' rating system or is something wrong with the people who…
tbh I just feel like they give anything with idols/cute young actors/made by studio dragon high grades. some of these dramas are plainly terrible but all these people will just go and give them straight 10's. it's a shame, but I still hope the drama community can mature and learn to enjoy different things.

The only similarity between this and sky caslte for me is how they both treat makjang as a metatext of sorts... but beyond that, there's nothing similar at all. While Sky castle was more of a deconstruction of makjang, trying to question the main themes through the plot itself, Penthouse, much like the last Kim Soon Ok drama, Last Empress, is more focused on the structure of makjang itself: it's about taking it to extremes, forcing it till it becomes really unbelieveable - in a sense, its baroque style feels kinda like old epic literature. But when you apply this old, "operatic"(ironically, everyone is focused on becoming damn opera singers) style to the current social problems, it feels... funny. Maybe because we can't accept that, although the drama is completely over-the-top, it's still commenting on lots of social themes with those things. Gentrification here is a theme as is in many of the dramas from the last two years, but honestly? Here it's where it might be the most efficient at portraying this problem: back in the writings of Karl Marx, there were many instances where Marx many times compared capitalism with vampirism. Watching this, you can't not feel that Joo Dan Tae is a Dracula-esque figure of sorts, he even has his own castle(s) and, just like Dracula, used his magic powers to enchant his "Mina" figure (Soo Ryun). I'll stop here for now as I've already written a lot, and I'll probably save it for when I have to write a full review. Hope you guys start enjoying the silly exploitative nature of this drama if you can! Nothing wrong with not liking it either.
