Light-hearted Romp

If you go into this without a great deal of expectation, you'll be rewarded with an uncomplicated romantic comedy with some genuinely funny moments.

Most of the fun comes from Han Ye Seul who carries the show with a degree of aplomb. Her character development is almost indiscernible but still pulls you along and no matter how dreadfully she behaves you never really dislike her.
Oh Ji Ho provides a serviceable foil in his portrayal of Jang Soo but he is a character we have all met before.

The rest of the cast play thier roles adequately and the side plots pootle along satisfactorily.

The success and indeed the failure of the show is really in the turning of a film into a 16 hour show. Whilst it allows for a much greater depth to the characters and the 'plot', sadly this isn't realised leaving a 'this could have been great' feeling after many episodes.

Still well worth a watch with it being perfectly feasible to FF through most of the side plots.

I’ll be the first to admit that this drama isn’t anything spectacular. If you were to create the definitive list of “50 best Korean Dramas ever made,” I doubt Fantasy Couple would make the cut. It’s light and simple, some of the direction is low budget and dated, some of the story elements are cliche and predictable, most of the acting isn’t anything spectacular, etc.

You know what? I don’t care. I absolutely ADORE this drama. Honest to god, it’s probably in my top 5 favorite dramas I’ve seen. I love it so much. I could watch again and again and never get tired of it.

What is it about this fluffy Rom Com that stuck with me so? The answer is simple: Na Sang-Shil / Jo Anna. More specifically, Han Ye-Seul provides us with one of the most unique and endearing female leads I’ve ever come across.

Some people were annoyed by Jo Anna, but I don’t understand how they could be! I loved her from beginning to end. It may be because I have a weakness for the “vain and cold-hearted rich girl” trope; regardless, Na Sang-Shil is a hoot. I love that while she does evolve as a character, she never loses that sharp, ice-queen edge.

She has no time for anyone’s manipulation and passive aggression, and will bluntly call them out on it. He savage interactions with the second female lead was so satisfying to watch. It’s so refreshing to have a female lead that refuses to keep quiet. She brought everything to the surface, and I never had to worry about annoying misunderstandings with her. Most importantly, Na Sang-Shil / Jo-Anna just makes me laugh. I don’t know what it is about her, but she makes me crack up everytime. (Oh, and when Na Sang-Shil is happy? It is the cutest thing ever!)

While Han Ye-Seul’s character and performance is the biggest draw for me, it’s not the only charm of this drama. Oh Ji-Ho does a great job as the stingy and stubborn Jang Chul-Soo, and he makes a great comic partner alongside Han Ye-Seul. Kim Sung Min as Jo-Anna’s husband Billy Park and Kim Kwang-Kyu as his right-hand man Mr. King were a duo I thought I’d get tired of, but surprisingly I was never bored during their scenes. In fact, I was surprised by how much I sympathized with Billy. Jung Soo-Young is great (as always) as the dim-witted Kang-Ja, and her and Na Sang-Shil make a surprisingly sweet duo. The three nephews were cute as well.

I was addicted from this drama from beginning to end. Even the slower parts, which were few, kept me engaged. It may not be objectively great, but it will always hold a special place in my heart.

The OG drama

This drama is a gem to my family. We loved main girl's stubborn and greedy outer shell but soft inner shell. She said so many iconic lines that we repeat everyday. It was very cracky in the first 80% of the show but then became serious at the end. I cried at the end because of the main girl's dilemma that she has all the money in the world but all she wants to do is go back to the cozy family and eat dinner with them. But at the end she had to let go because realistically she can't go back. My dad rewatched the end so many times that we lost the disc for it hahahaha

My all-time favorite Korea Series

I am from Myanmar. I remember that a Myanmar national TV channel (MRTV) used to broadcast this series around 9 PM when
I was in grade school. I was really into it because it was both funny and interesting. I was impressed by Jo Anna's fashion and still liked her Na Shang Chi's style. Na Shang Chi's fashion was a bit outdated and awkward though. Her character was cute and fit in naturally.
I like the main actor as well as the supporting leads- They were all amazing at acting. Child actors were especially cute and talented. it was as if they were truly living those moments in the drama. I also admire the incredible team behind this series. The skillful direction and hard work of everyone involved made it a masterpiece.
I can't even count how many times I rewatch this series. It gave me many moral lessons and gave me a deeper understanding of human nature. It makes me realize even the characters in the movie have their flaws, and since then, I've come to understand that we can't expect ppl in real life to always show their best sides either.
If you haven't watched this series yet, I highly recommend it. While some parts of the plots might be a bit outdated compared to today's timeline, if you embrace it with a 2000s mindset, I'm sure you will thoroughly enjoy it.

Best K-Drama romcom I've seen yet

Like what others have said about this drama, I didn’t have the best of expectations going into it. Anna’s personality in the first episode in particular was really edging me with how much of a prick was was to literally everyone (really exacerbated in the second episode with the farewell party), so that plus on paper it being a classic textbook trope, really set it up for being a standard drama (nothing real special but nothing terrible either, as I could already see the good acting and pacing by this point), but as the story continued, my opinion quickly changed for the better.
I quite honestly wasn’t expecting Anna to develop so “naturally” after losing her memory, as in she didn’t start from a BLANK SLATE (which is completely unrealistic for losing your memory at that age, unconscious should habits stay) as she still kept her very sharp tongue, but became more human through the show, making her one of the more unique characters I’ve seen in Asian dramas at this point. Although the other characters didn’t exhibit much development (including Chul-Su) it is still realistic again because of the age, I don’t expect a 30 year old guy to redevelop his emotions like he’s a 15 year old boy. That being said though, they also weren’t simple characters; Cheol-Su not actually being poor just frugal, and never once got swayed by his ex’s feelings was expected but still gave him depth and us insight on how mature he is, something that I feel many romcom dramas from this era (and later) mess up. All of this put together also made sure that 0 stupid melodrama happened, like Anna literally decided to leave one episode and it took 3 minutes for Cheol-Su to find her because he didn’t sit around and mope but actually do something using his connections.
The side characters and their stories are equally as funny in my opinion, I quite honestly liked Kang-Ja and her eccentric personality, and despite being a comedic relief character, she even contributed to the story in significant ways too. And the Kye-Ju Shil-Jang romance was a funny sub plot, it always made me laugh and never felt like they used it to just pad for time.
Technical things are above average for this era in my opinion; good lighting, camera work, acting (wish they had Han Ye-Seul write her English lines but whatever), and I especially liked the sound track, extremely catchy, I got one of them as my timer alarm sound now hahahaha.
Overall a great watch, I highly recommend this to any person who wants a sweet romcom to watch. 10/10
