I didn't really think I would like this movie as much as I did, since I really loved the drama version and thought it couldn't compare to it. Oh boy how I was wrong. I will continue this review without mentioning the drama, because it must be reviewed as a movie itself, not an adaptation. My comparison between the movie and drama will be at the end.

Story: The story is very cute and sweet. It perfectly mixes the in-game story and the real world story, making it both a fantasy and a coming-of-age movie. Some parts of the story where rushed because of the small time frame for the movie, but the most important parts where there. I really liked that they included a lot of gaming to the second part of the movie, showing how you can relate to the people you care about through games, too. I also liked that they showed the characters failing some times, that made it more relatable and realistic. One part that I didn't like was that they hid Xiao Nai's motives for the first part of the movie, which made it really hard to care for him or understand him; it would've served the character better if his motives and intentions were clear from the start.

Characters: I believe that this is what the movie sacrificed the more in service of the story. It had so much story to go through, that we were not able to get to know the characters as deeply as I would've liked. The character that really stood out was Bei Wei Wei. She was strong, temperamental, brave and deeply compassionate towards the people she cared about. For me she was the best part of the movie by far. Xiao Nai was a good character but we didn't really spend a lot of time getting to know him; he's your typical alfa-male. Because of this, the moment that I liked him the most was when he was going through a hard time, since it's the only time where I was truly able to see how he processed emotions and information. As for the supporting characters, they were basically non-existing since there was no time to develop them, which was truly a shame.

Actors: The standout for me was Angelababy. I had seen him in a drama before and I wasn't impressed, but here she shone through and gave a very emotional and nuanced performance. Jing Bo Ran did the best with what he was given, but as mentioned above, we really didn't get that much insight to him.

Comparisons with drama
I'm still going back and forth with wether the love story was better in the drama or the movie. The movie rushes through their romance, but once it's there it portrays it beautifully. Another thing that I really loved in the movie was that they were equals in their relationship, and collaborated and worked together. And the actor had great chemistry.
The pacing of the story was a lot better in the drama, since it had more time to breathe, but the movie is also able to remove fillers and concentrate on the main parts of the story.

Final Thoughts
This is a very light and sweet movie. It's not the best movie in the world but it is a vey good adaptation and can stand on its own. This is also a very good altenative if you're not willing to invest the time to watch the whole drama. You will especially enjoy it if you have ever been part of an online gaming community, or forums.

Watch this after the series

Have to be honest, was hesitant to watch this after watching Love O2O series. Loved the series and its FL & ML so much that inner self rejected this to watch back in 2018. Which was a major regret. This movie is so good. The actors FL & ML both acted so well in this movie. Really want them to come together in any series!!!
The movie is basically realistic fast version of series. The acting, script, the setup was more towards realism. Not total fantasy like the series.
Would recommend to watch this after you watch the series.. Else you might think the series is more towards cringe side.
Enjoyed both of them so much.

Its a must watch if haven't yet.

I must say that I do rather enjoy the storyline of it, especially having had watched the drama beforehand which probably does influence my rating. The movie isn't as great as the show, simply for the fact of lack of time because besides that, there was nothing really wrong with it. Had different set of cast than the show, but grew to love them just the same.

Where the show had two different characters for the one who was Weiwei's ex in the game and then who fell in love with her at school, it did feel a bit rushed in things. Like why was he trying to court her if he seemed to be seeing that one girl in the game in real life? That didn't make sense, but it didn't necessarily hurt the storyline since they didn't focus too much on him after the restaurant scene.

My favorite part would be the end, like when the one guy found out the one player he had a connection with that suddenly disappeared was a guy. That part I liked in the show, so it was a nice addition to have in the story, even though it seemed like it was going to be like a deleted scene or blooper, which I almost didn't pay attention to.

Overall, it was a solid watch. Probably will rewatch this in the future.

In drama version everything develops slowly so in the movie version it does feel a bit rushed. However i loved the heroine in this. She is beautiful, outspoken and bubbly. Even the hero didnt feel cold and unapproachable and was not considered a “god” . Maybe that’s why it felt more realistic. I enjoyed it thoroughly. The visuals are nice and the fighting sequence are good.
There are some changes in the characters so it does deviate the drama story. But it didn’t matter to me..i knew how the story is going to end but was still excited for the same.
Its like watching the drama at 3x speed?

If you gotta do both, watch movie before drama version of this series

Fresh off my Love O2O high I of course had to check out the movie adaptation and was kinda disappointed. Not only did they have to compress the story, they ended up compressing some of the special effects as well, or at least that was how it felt like. Those fight scenes were super lame and staged, man.

Now while Weiwei in the novel visually looks closer to Angelababy than Zheng Shuang, AB's acting is just scraping the surface of stuff. Jing Boran does not look too great in his game character get up (that silver wig is atrocious) after the memory of Yang Yang in the same role so I had trouble believing he was this amazing charming dude that everyone admired.

It's good for eye candy and I guess MV material if you take some clips, but this is like the low carb low sugar version of Love O2O.

A warm, nice, short and to the point game-real life movie! In which Bo Ran is shinning brightly....

Really nice ..short and to the point...I have to confess its first time that I have seen Angela Baby and Jing Bo Ran and I was totally knocked off!!! I am in love with both of them...a nice watch.....and Bo Ran is suuuuuuccchhhh an EYE CANDY!!!!

The plot is typical, nothing spectacular: boy meets girl in a game, they meet in real life, they fall in love and live happily ever after. So no eye opener here, except that the balance between game and real life is good, the pace is great...short and to the point.

Some characters are boring and dont have too much significance for the plot, except the fact that they give the impression that the game is really popular.

Directing: is good, the acting looked real and with only few fractures in the rhythm of the movie. the characters looked credible and acted natural
Acting: Its my 1st time seeing AngelaBaby and Jing Bo Ran....I think both deserve their fame since they do seem to act credible...especially Bo ran for which I have definitely fall...he reminds me a bit of Seo Kang Joon ( except we miss the eyes and smile). I was very happy to see Angelababy acting natural-like, and not like Zheng Shuang who is totally false in her roles (because of her bad acting I was never able to finish Love O2O)...I will definitely search for more movies with these folks.

Seeing Li Xian and Seven Tan as a bonus, even if they act cameos :-).

So...if you need to feel optimistic, warm and happy you definitely need to watch such a movie...lovely, cheesy, ending well. The princess gets her prince on a white horse and live happily ever after!

The end!

I watched the drama first and was in a hurry to finish it cause I found it too borrying. Don’t know why I wanted to watch the movie when it released on Netflix, but glad that I did it.

Even when the story is catching, the drama didn’t bring me the same feels the actors on the movie did. Angelababy portrayed Bei Wei Wei with much more emotions, did a good scene with Jing Bo Ran as the main couple learning to like each other besides the game, demonstrated why she is one of the top 10 and I can’t forget how in the movie they made it clear she was a computer science’s student (when she’s with Xiao Nai and the team working on the new game, and the beginning with Cao Guang tho).

I reaaaaaally liked the Er Xi from the movie, how she already plays the game with Bei Wei Wei and don’t depend on her to do the games’ things (if you know what I mean, even if I know it was a part of the plot of the drama to continue). I liked every character, even THAT Cao Guang, cause in the drama I disliked him (the character), and the movie confirmed it to me. KO being friends with Bei Wei Wei since the beginning as the lan house owner was surely perfect, and the actor wasn’t a robot, even the interaction with Hao Mei in the end… Perfect. The one thing that I missed from the drama was the interactions of Bei Wei Wei with Xiao Nai’s friends, but is a movie, they can’t show every little thing the drama did.

And applause to Jing Bo Ran, I liked him the most. He wasn’t as mechanic as Yang Yang portraying Xiao Nai and I was surprised to hear he screaming to his friends to stop fighting and even running with them to get to the building… make me think that Xiao Nai has a young heart after all. He really is charming, I was astonished.

Love O2O is a good movie to pass your time by, to drink a coffee or a tea while watching it alone wondering if someone will ever find you interesting just because you play a game well. And then, rewatch it other day cause it really was a good movie and you don’t have anything besides it to watch.

When I saw this advertised I will admit I was a bit biased. I didn't think I would enjoy it as much as the TV show. I am like that with a lot of remakes. I wasn't sure the actors would be as good, or if the storyline would flow as well.
The chemistry between the main characters really helped to sell me on the movie. They seemed very natural with one another but also with the other characters.
I liked how they kept to the storyline in some ways but it wasn't exact. Different characters playing different roles, events happening differently, made it into its own thing. So, I stopped comparing it to the TV show and just enjoyed it for its own charms.

Good, but felt a bit rushed.

I liked this movie, i watched it for the second time because i wanted to write a revieuw and the first time was to long ago to remember the details. I enjoyed it as much as the first time.

The story is good, but it feels rushed. I also watched the series and this story is a lot better as a long series, it just needs the time to realy tell the story right. Even if i hadn't watched the series i still would feel the movie feels rushed. But it's still a good watch as a movie.

The visuals are stunning, good music and good special effects.
The actors did a good job and the dynamics and chemistry of the leads were good. Plus i really can appreciate a good kiss!

Love O2O condensed

I have watched the series too many time to count, often skipping the plot driving side plot characters. This movie does a great job of capturing that essence in a short time span- Weiwei's smart but worldly naive personality, Xiao Nai's smart but worldly aloof side, their friendships, their budding romance, their stumbles, their love. It gave nods to the things and characters that drove the series without getting bogged down. Does it change the story a bit- Yeah, kinda but not really. If you enjoyed the series, this is worth the watch to remember that happy feeling. If you haven't watched either, I would get on that next!
