Instigated by the State Preceptor and the Infanta, the Emperor orders Lan Zhi to search for the wanted Tian Shu in Minister Ye’s residence. While his day raid ends fruitlessly, he catches both Yuan An and Tian Shu on the city’s outskirts at midnight, though he subsequently relents as they insist on Tian Shu’s innocence. However, the Infanta decides to intervene by obtaining the Empress’s permission to arrest Yuan An. Just as she is about to torture Yuan An, Lan Zhi arrives and begs the Infanta to be lenient.
