This apply mostly for the first half of Love in Flames of War:
- the male chases the female first & both are flirty
- in both their marriage is somewhat forced ( not so much in Story of Ming Lan )
- when they get married the male lead already likes the female lead, however the female lead will start to like & love him after the they get married
- in both the male leads are clever, scheming and have military power; however in Story of Ming Lan the male lead is more clever and charismatic
- both female leads are calm, quick witted and feminists ; though Ming Lan is by far smarter and more rational
- both have the scheming and unreasonable " third party " aka second male and female lead; however in Story of Ming Lan, the love triangle plots are very different in terms of dynamic, when they happen and how the main characters feels about them
- well-matched and beautiful OSTs
Extra things that are not similar but it makes Story of Ming Lan an outstanding drama:
- the story is longer therefore the female lead and male lead have a big character development ( which totally makes sense in justifying why certain characters & incidents are the way they are ) ; the plot is more complex and the quality is better
- far less misunderstandings between the leads and much more trust
- the story revolves a lot around the families of both female & male lead but is made very entertaining
- by the time the leads get married both have been through a lot of hardship and have matured
- every character is well played by the actors ( even support roles ) hence I've never found myself skipping forward
- when it was filmed the main actors were dating and later got married therefore all the romance scenes and the way they look at each other is something else and totally worth the wait
- no dubbing, using on set voices
To conclude, The Story of Ming Lan gives similar vibes, however the plot and characters are superior and more captivating. Hence I highly recommend watching it.

While Si Jin has the element of redoing the past and a higher status/ wealthier family both dramas primarily highlight women's conflicts and struggles within the family. Elder women in both dramas are scheming and continuously hold down the female lead. Much more focus is on her story with the male lead being present but the narrative being told in her point of view most of the time.
While these shows are very different, I think there are still some similarities worth checking out.
1. The male lead of both of these shows is a badass who at first has a bit of a bad reputation.
2. Ths male lead is pretty upbeat and loves to tease the female lead
3. The male lead falls first and fully devotes himself to her once he falls
4. The male lead is extremely smart and saves fhe female lead multiple times
5. The female leads are both pretty cool but in different ways. In Story of Ming Lan, she can't fight, but she can scheme and battle indirectly while in Arsenal Military Academy, she can and does fight
6. The male lead gets jealous easily (if your into that)
My favorite part of both shows js the male lead and how he is cool, smart, badass, and most of all, fun. He isn't stiff and boring like so many male leads are. He also genuibly loves the female lead and isnt afraid to show it.

If you wish to see another masterpiece, The Ming Dynasty 2019 is considered as one as the male actors playing Emperors Yongle, Hongxi and Xuande are brilliant in portraying the characters.
Yongle in this drama is dark and ruthless by just casting his deadly glance and gaze. His sons and grandson are terrified of him.
I love watching his scenes with his sons and grandson. Although Yongle was a tyrant, he clearly loved his flesh and blood.

Same actress who portrait MING LAN, but with different temper. Lu Zhen is more upfront front the start.
"To escape her cruel stepmother, Lu Zhen enters the palace as an attendant. She was quickly promoted through the ranks for her pottery-making skill. During this time, she captures the heart of crown prince Gao Zhan. However, she can never be with him as social status and jealous enemies work against her at every turn. She devotes herself to politics and helps Gao Zhan defeat a coup d'etat. Though Gao Zhan can not make her his empress, he bestows her with the highest position in the land, the female prime minister."
