The opening song was everything. This show deserves +10 alone for all the outfits of the main lead actress.
I love all the cases. They were so interesting . I didnt care too much for the main plot about one of her family members (I dont want to give any spoilers) so that's why I am not giving it a 10.
Very Strong female lead. Her house, her cars, her wealth, her many outfits changes, the dances, ughhhh just everything !!!
Omg and the romance and dynamic between out 2nd lead actors was everything. The best part of the show besides the cases for me.
Beautiful chemistry with the leads. I didnt mind that they didnt develop the romance too much because this was a detective show after all; they gave us just enough and that's fine with me.

Costumes and cast chemistry, WOW

*NOTE* I watched this show on SBS on demand with a VPN (they claim it's only available until December 2022, so maybe it'll be around on the internet with subtitles around then? idk If you have a VPN, use it to watch bc it's free on SBS)

I read a review for this show about how amazing the costumes are and was BLOWN AWAY! She is so, so stylish in every episode! Loved it! Absolutely no notes! (also, bc they KNEW how to style the ML correctly, which is SO IMPORTANT)

The acting/writing combo was a little so-so IMO. They just quite know how to mesh a procedural crime show with a side of romance and comedy. If you've seen other Chinese crime shows that take place in the Republican Era, then you know exactly what I'm talking about. They tried to pace all the romantic and comedy parts out nicely in the beginning episodes and then squished it altogether uncomfortably at the very end. There were romantic moments throughout the series that would spontaneously happen, but then they'd NEVER! DISCUSS! IT! And it drove me CRAZY! So, if you're watching for romance, you will be very disappointed. (A quick note tho that the chemistry between the two leads was quite good, so you feel the romantic tension, just without a lot of romantic action)

HOWEVER, if you're watching for the crime, then you'll be very interested. Each crime is only two episodes long, so it's not boring or dragged out and you get a whole variety of cases in just 30 episodes. The crimes themselves were also a lot more complex than other Republican Era crime shows like Detective L or My Roommate is a Detective. I often didn't really figure out who the murderer was until the final reveal, which was so entertaining!

And finally, onto my favorite part of this show. THE SIDE CHARACTERS! I mean. OH MY GOD! Incredible! Absolutely magical! They were all fantastic! You really felt like the cast themselves enjoyed being together, which made all of their interactions feel so real and enjoyable to watch. Uncle Xiang was the GOAT of the whole show and I will stand by that until the day I die. If you love a show with good chemistry between not just the main two leads but everyone, then you must watch this show! *chefs kiss*

only recommended for those who want to watch a detective drama but don't want to think ,, multiple cases, lot of cases for 34 episodes only


and honestly I think the acting is too over ,overacting ,,, the investigation stage is NOT CLEAR AT ALL, it just happens, without any clear flow or reason,,, they made a television drama detective murder, but did not dare to show the state of the corpse at the scene ,, and even for the bruises and focus injuries were sometimes not on the wound ,, blurry,,, sometimes a little boring and sleepy,

the storyline and case solving are not running well at all,there is no feeling of the audience participating, all the evidence and allegations only those who know and are immediately expressed in the next scene,without any scene that they find something(sometimes),,, and the evidence shown is also general evidence, such as buying 4 train tickets under her own name, the owner of the old house but claims not to know where the child went, the real name of the boutique model, the buyer of the painting and the instigator of the murder using his real name

And when the inspector and miss s are not in the same place but the clue that one person gets, the other can already know (boutique during tailor's questioning about the lies in ironing clothes)

The worst part is in the last two case ,, didnt know what they doing,, shuddenly get a clue And if ding ru shan target is lunar calender 15th 7 month birthdate girl, why his target is su wen li? ,Isn't the target age not a problem if that means the target age does not have to be the same age as with his daughter or born in the same YEAR with his daughter, if that is the case, easier if he looking for other targets with the same month and lunar date as his daughter

Ep 1 ,, The investigation stage is not clear from where, just go ahead, how come taozi is suddenly told to investigate xue姨 he just goes along and xueyi told her not to open their pockets and they really didn't open it at all?


Ep4, without any signs at all, Xiaoyu has run away from the orphanage?

then what has to do with haoyu slipping while climbing the ladder? Besides, that's not the reason why he doesn't take the train again or it's not a important evidence of anything at that year ,,,,, And the 2 men should have been arrested because they were the main suspect, why were they even released?

Ep5, What photos did the victim use to threaten anziyu ?, if don't want to be shown at least discussed about what photo is that! Or not discussed at all, (yes even though I more or less know what photo)

Things I adored

1 Almost everything.

2 The genre. Lighthearted romantic mysteries are my favorite series and I'm bummed I can't find enough in any language. This one was particularly good, much much better than the Australian version for sure, but also any other series I watched over the years. The atmosphere, the music, the decors, Shanghai, most of the cases. Everything was great. A true gem and a real pleasure to watch it. I even tried to slow down just to have something to wait for.

3 Wen li, the FL. I adored her character and the actress. She played her role perfectly. So beautiful, so elegant, gorgeous outfits. A witty personality, clever, generous, kind, with a sense of humor. To me she was perfect. I didn't dislike a single one of her scenes.

4 Qiu Heng, the ML. The only way I can describe how I felt about him is that I fell in love with the character and the actor. I can't imagine anyone else play this role. He was absolutely perfect. His smile, his way of looking at her, his sense of humor, his relationship with his team and all the other characters. I wish I found someone like him in real life. I couldn't find a single thing I didn't like. Not to mention his good looks and his way of dressing, Dashing.

5 The chemistry between the leads. Perfect couple. They both shone in their scenes together and my only regret is they didn't kiss more. That would be perfect.

6 Tao Zi. Such a great character and I wanted her to be happy. So brave and loyal and smart. I loved her. She was the perfect sidekick to Wen li.

7 Xiao An. Another attaching and lovable character. His romance with Tao Zi was one of the highlights of the series. So many cute and funny moments. I also loved how loyal he was and his relationship with the ML. That was one of the best work relationships I've seen in a series. Built on respect but also camaraderie and loyalty and care.

8 Song and Tan. I adored both. The way they came into the series, their relationship and their loyalty to Wen li and the other characters. They have been a big part of why I adored this series.

9 Uncle Xiang I want to mention him separately because he was perfect in his role. It was so clear he loved Wen li and he cared about everyone. His acting was truly good.

10 Su Yun. What a marvelous actress and so beautiful. I had tears in my eyes when we first met her and I loved how things evolved. She was the cutest and I wish her a great career. She shone in the series and deserves a big bravo forthe way she played her role.

11 The cars. I loved all of them. I don't even drive but these cars are so gorgeous.

12 The last scene. So fitting to the rest of the series. I won't spoilt it but it had everything: humor, romance, elegance. I wish it wasn't the ending.

Things I loved.

1 All the other characters. The aunt, the forensic doctor, Ru Qing. Each one brought something to the series.

Things I hated.

1 Hated is strong maybe but disliked isn't strong enough. I hated the way the sister story went. I didn't mind Wen li having to deal with this, it made her character more layered, but the whole script was stupid. Not their fault sine this is from a series and I think it was written by the author this way, but still. So stupid. Even with such a stupid plot they could have done something better. It didn't pay off in the end.

2 Ru Shan. Yes, we are supposed to hate him, but to me it was much more than that. It made me feel uncomfortable and it wasn't only the character but the actor. I guess we can say he managed to play his role well and maybe you are right, but still. It didn't fit with the lighthearted vie of the series. It ruined perfection for me. I can't give it less than 10 with everyone else being perfect, but if I had to rate only the sister plot, 5 would be generous.

In conclusion, one of my favorite series and I wish they'd do another season. I know they won't, but I can still dream. They created a family and I adored every member of this family.
