Well Constructed Drama
The Imperial Coroner was just a show I randomly saw one day on Youtube. I didn't think much of it when I first clicked on it, but boy- was I in for a ride!First of all, the story. I thought it was a pretty coherent, well-built story. It's engaging it and can educate the viewer on subjects such as anatomy, clue finding and also on ancient China. It's always nice to view a show where you can learn something or gain some insight! The story was complex, with all moments being important and building on to the major plotline. It was kind of hard to follow at times since it does heavily revolve court politics and schemes. One thing I disliked was the ending. I found it to be quite rushed (I like smooth and longer endings to give myself a better conclusion). It wasn't bad, as most people got what they deserved, but they could have slowed it down a little since the climax of the story was basically the last couple of episodes. Overall, it was good! I also liked how they started each ep with a quick recap in a character's POV. The show is also relatively fast-paced with no unnecessary filler eps, drama, etc.
There were some graphic scenes, especially one involving a doctor, which some may find triggering or disturbing. So beware of that. In general, since Chu Chu is a coroner, they don't show many revealing/disturbing scenes (most are up close or shots of her Chu Chu's face, etc.)
The acting was, for the most part, pretty good. Apart from the second ML (Jing Yi/ Yang Ting Dong), I did not know anyone from the show, so I did not know what to expect from them. It was pleasant knowing that most of them were great with their roles! Especially the Eunuch Qin Luan (Ma Huai Hu). I found him to be very funny and interesting in a way. Since he had his reproductive organ cut off, and this could not produce hormones like testosterone, he's got an obsession with beards LOL. Chu Chu (Su Xiao Tong) was good, but I really did not like her child-like voice dub, got used to it later tho (I guess). Xiao Jin Yu was portrayed as a really smart person. Like dang, there are few things he can't overcome. At least he isn't one of those "perfect" people in some dramas who excel at everything they do :)
The music was alright. I didn't find it notable or anything, but they were appropriate for the situations and such.
Give it a watch, especially if you like detective-type shows! You'll enjoy it!!

An Accidentally Great Mystery
I went into The Imperial Coroner with absolutely zero expectations. One bored evening, nothing to watch, clicked play on a whim. And then whoops. I got hooked. What I thought would be background noise turned into a full on binge, and I ended up having way more fun than expected. The story unfolds during the Tang Dynasty under Emperor Xuanzong, a time when the court was basically a political tug of war. Eunuchs held alarming power thanks to their control over the imperial guards, emperors were trying to claw authority back, and succession was anything but smooth. All of this historical messiness actually matters, because it fuels the motivations, secrets, and long running grudges that drive the plot forward.
Chu Chu is a young coroner from the quiet corners of Qianzhou who heads to Chang’an to earn her credentials. She is earnest, idealistic, and very serious about dead bodies. Her sharp observations catch the attention of Prince An, Xiao Jinyu, the head of the Three Judicial Offices. What starts as routine casework slowly connects to an old unsolved mystery tied to a missing person from decades earlier, and from there the story snowballs into a conspiracy with roots buried deep in the past.
Despite the title, this drama is not solely Chu Chu’s show. Jinyu is really the mastermind who ties everything together, and the narrative leans heavily on his intelligence and intuition. Some viewers might struggle with Chu Chu’s wide eyed innocence and limited range of expressions, which sometimes clash with how brilliant she is supposed to be.
This is a plot first drama, so most characters are not deeply layered, but they are all competent and useful, which I loved. Jinli and Lengyue handle the physical side of things and bring military and Jianghu knowledge. Jingyi plays investigator, errand runner, and comic relief all at once. The cast is young and a bit green, yet their chemistry is strong enough to carry the show. The real scene stealers, though, are the eunuchs Qin Luan and Sun Mingde. Qin Luan in particular is deliciously clever and manipulative, easily one of the most entertaining characters. He honestly could go toe to toe with any legendary schemer. I also find his obsession with mustache to be quirky, weird, yet oddly hilarious.
One of the drama’s biggest strengths is how it visualizes complex ideas. Autopsies, hidden messages, chess games, riddles, and codes are all presented in ways that are easy to follow without feeling dumbed down. You are not really invited to solve the mysteries yourself, but watching Jinyu unpack each detail is still satisfying. That said, the overarching mystery stumbles near the finish line. While all the threads do come together neatly, the main villain is revealed too early and without much impact. Instead of feeling like a brilliant chess match, it feels like the antagonist suddenly starts making sloppy choices. A character built up as highly intelligent ends up panicking, exposing themselves, and handing over clues that are far too easy to decode. The final stretch lacks tension, and after a certain major reveal involving a witch doctor, everything that follows feels progressively less exciting.
Even with those flaws, I genuinely enjoyed this drama. What started as a boredom watch turned into something clever, charming, and consistently engaging. It is not perfect, but it is one of the stronger plot driven Chinese dramas out there, and well worth your time if you like smart mysteries with a likable team at the center.

Decent Storyline, Interesting Premise
The storyline kind of dragged on for me near the end and I definitely wasn't as invested as in the beginning (it might have to do with how some the main antagonist didn't make me feel much ....) but overall, great relationship building between the side characters and FL/ML. If you're looking for a romance drama, this ain't it since it's pretty much 90% plot-driven.What I found hilarious about this was how the FL/ML kept roleplaying as the attacker/murdered victim in an attempt to figure out how they died. Lol.

Lighthearted period drama
This was a really delightful find for me! The storyline flows very well, nothing overly complicated yet has a bit of mystery factor injected.I particularly enjoyed how some forensics are being incorporated into the drama which made the whole drama so interesting. It also has abit of a crime solving which was pleasant to watch.
The plot wasn’t overly complicated nor very scheming. Quite light hearted and enjoyable to watch! The amount of romance was just right too. This is a must watch if you love a light hearted period drama with some interesting factors (forensics)!
Ending was nicely done as well, yes it’s a happy ending!

Here we go again
Going by the high ratings I was prepped to watch what I assumed would be a delightful romance that was interspersed with some mystery, but what I got instead was case upon case of murders being resolved by the leads without even a modicum of romantic feelings. Undoubtedly this was a well written script, however, and while it satisfies the sleuth in me, it was a let down in other ways. For one, I didn't expect the FL to look or act so childlike which is one of the biggest problems I have with most Chinese dramas. This need to infantalize the FLs in C-dramas has got to stop. The actress had this deer-in-a-headlights look whenever she wasn't performing an autopsy and her interactions with the ML and supporting actors were painful to watch. While this might be a script issue still there was that disconnect that gradually got me so exasparated I had to watch at 2x speed.I think the ML together with his sidekick brother carried the entire series with their performance.

missed the mark for me :(
I really wanted to like this. T_T Many people have great things to say about it calling it the underdog and the surprise sleeper hit, but I struggled to connect to it. I didn't like the voice actor for the FL (her real voice is much better), I didn't like the lack of facial expression or vocal emotion on the ML (which never really improves), and I didn't like a large swathe of the actors (his mom, the evil eunuch with his hair obsession, etc.), I didn't like how fake the armor looked (normally I can overlook if the story is good, but the helmets and gauntlets were visibly bending and squishing with every physical movement), and I couldn't get into the mystery, etc.To be fully transparent, it's at least partially because I just finished Love Like The Galaxy. It completely blew all my expectations into the ether with how good it was (production value, script, costumes, set design, acting, etc.). They're very different dramas, but I don't think I was able to stop myself from constantly comparing the two. Especially since they both seemed to have been filmed in Hengdian, and I could pick out sets they both used in their dramas. Still, I had trouble connecting to the characters and the plot as a standalone drama. I think I needed a more charismatic male lead or more action to keep me locked in. Even the action scenes were unimpressive in how they were filmed; camera angles and shots were taken ultra close to each person, and it felt like a camera trick to hide sloppy choreography.
Plus points for:
- Jing Yi and Leng Yue. They were fantastic characters and super fun to watch.
- The use of animation to explain intricate devices (like the secret stove underneath the house) or autopsy scenes.
- The re-enactment scenes of murders were a quirky and cute way to provide skinship for our otherwise very mild CP.
The drama has many positive points, and I can see how someone who maybe enjoys The Ancient Detective would find this equally, if not more, gravitating.
I'm sure this drama is fantastic for a lot of people, but I think I just need to stick with what I know I like - genres more in line with The Rebel Princess, Love Like The Galaxy, Sleuth of Ming Dynasty, etc.

A hidden gem
Story:Prince An is an talented officer who is in charge of criminal lawsuit and chu chu comes from a family of coroners whose identity is a mystery together they solve cases and one of the biggest case which they uncover is the case case which has dragged for 18 years.
Cast:
All cast are fresh ones who did an amazing job not only the cast but the production crew has also done a great job. The story is fresh, their method of solving cases is shown well.
The romance between ML and FL is a slow budding and healthy one. The story doesn't feel draggy at all. There are 2 sets of villian in this story one is Head of Eunuch and other is Xue Ru Cheng who is trying to take the crown who is also ML's teacher.
There is SML and SFL pair who are like tom and jerry who has a good friendship with ML and FL.
It is good historical sherlock Holmes drama where the pacing and the script both are good. If you love to watch detective drama then this is it.

underdog drama of 2021!
this drama is an absolute gem. everything about this drama was almost perfect. the storyline ( & the cute casts) got me so hooked. all the cases made so much sense and the way they explained the autopsies/backstory of each case were amazing. they made sure all audiences are able to understand what was going on. kudos to the amazing writer, director, editor, crew and the lovable casts! easily my favourite drama of 2021. this is a drama that you'd want to skip at first but turns out to be one of the BEST. in need of a season 2 please ;)Was this review helpful to you?
Underrated Gem
I'd initially avoided this show because I wasn't sure it could put a new spin on the same old tale of the ancient detective, so imagine my absolute surprise and joy when I finally tried it out and it turned out to be not only competent but interesting and very well acted. My first pro has to be the lead characters and their relationships. Each of them had something to contribute to the plot and it always felt very organic. The ML was smart but his wit never came at the expense of any other lead which can be tiresome. No one had to be dulled so he could shine. Similarly, the FL was extremely competent in a believable way and despite being "young and innocent" she wasn't portrayed as someone who couldn't handle real life experiences. The other leads were just as smart and contributed almost equally to the story, which rarely happens. The romance (for the lead and second lead couples) was not overbearing and felt very natural and a part of the story too. Also have to say I enjoyed watching a ML who while smart and in a position of authority, does not bully or try to control the FL unnecessarily.
As for the plot and the intrigue, I really enjoyed piecing it all together along with the characters. It wasn't over complicated or outrageous and the cases the coroner was asked to handle really showcased her abilities, as well as the abilities of the other team members. I enjoyed all of it.

Its an Investigative / Crime / Mystery Drama
If you are looking for a love story or romance, this drama is not for you.The love story of the protagonists seems to be inserted into the story. The story is still good even though they didn't become a couple. The slow-burn love is too slow.. lol
So there isn't even a kiss scene here except for the mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
But except for the romance part of this series, everything is good.
The actors/actress are good... (even the supporting actors/actress)
The story is great. Even though there are many talk/dialogue scenes, it is not boring.
The music/OST/Movie sound effect is fantastic.
My rewatch value is low because I already know all the answers to the mysteries.. there's no point in me watching it again... especially since the romance part is not good.

refreshing
i rarely review shows that i watch but if a show particularly struck me then i can make an exception.anyways, since im not very elouquent and stuff, i'll just list down my likes and dislikes
likes:
- the cast and characterization of the characters are simply refreshing. i was expecting an annoying love triangle, female love rivals, or a really really naive FL or a cold ML. but none of that occured which i am so happy about.
- the girls were friends instead of rivals
- the relationship between the ML and FL was so wholesome and full of respect...it wasn't one-sided, both expressed their feelings right
- the FL didnt give up her dream just for the ML
- i also love the side characters, wish we got to see more of them
- i love the forensic to it as well and the mystery too...ML's deduction skills along with FL's forensic skills just work well together, they make a good team
dislikes:
- the plot was going good until they found their father,
- the main leads were too OP, there were stakes but not enough, they alway seem to be 10 steps ahead of the mastermind which kinda became boring
- i wished they showed more romance scenes between the leads TvT
- the ending was kind of rushed and compressed
- the bigger plot kinda fell flat to me since we already know who did it, so the way the masterminds died wasn't satisfying at all
- it felt too short, and kind of dragged towards the end
- more romance scenes between the leads pls
would i recommend?
definitely, despite the plot going a bit flat for me towards the end, i did enjoy it overall. and i got attached to the cast, they're so cute
