(Week 1 - Eps 01-05) 1916. Takei Chiyo lives in Osaka with her father, Teruwo, and her younger brother, Yoshio. While Chiyo is a cheerful girl, she's so busy caring for her brother and the chickens that she can't even go to elementary school. Then, Teruwo brings home a new wife, Kuriko. Though Chiyo is happy to be able to go to elementary school, Kuriko does no housework. As Chiyo gradually rebels against Kuriko, Yoshio suddenly disappears from home.
