An Incurable Case of Love Episode 1 Reactions
This is one of the reasons An Incurable Case of Love feels so refreshing even years later. The drama basically takes a trope that would normally fuel 10 episodes and says, "No, let's get that out of the way immediately. "Most romances would structure it like: Episode 1–8: secret crush; Episode 9–12: misunderstanding; Episode 13: confession; Episode 14–16: dating. Instead, Sakura Nanase walks in and essentially announces: "I like you." 🤣 And then keeps doing it. What makes it work is that the confession isn't the story. The story becomes: "Okay, you've confessed. Now what?" That's actually a much more interesting question. Because Tendo isn't rejecting her due to a misunderstanding. He is rejecting her because he's emotionally closed off, he's carrying grief, and he's not ready. Those are real obstacles. And Sakura is a good example of a heroine who could have been written terribly. On paper, she's: optimistic, persistent, inexperienced. That combination often becomes annoying. But the writers give her something crucial: agency. She makes choices. She pursues her goal. She improves herself. She's not waiting for Tendo to notice her. She's actively building a life that happens to include him. Satoh Takeru's casting is perfect because he understands the assignment. A lesser actor might have played Tendo as: "cold because cold is attractive." Satoh plays him as: "cold because warmth is dangerous." That's a completely different energy. You can feel that the distance is costing him something. That's what creates the chemistry.
By the end of the episode, the drama reveals something important: Tendo already remembers her. The audience's first assumption is: "She changed her life because of him, but he probably doesn't remember her." That's the standard romance formula. Then the drama quietly says: "Actually, he does." And not only does he remember her, he remembers the right thing. That's the part that gets me. He doesn't remember: "There was a girl who admired me." He remembers: "There was a girl who was worried about the patient." Those are completely different memories. And this is where Sakura distinguishes herself from many romantic heroines. When she reframes her motivation, she's essentially saying: "My dream wasn't really to marry a handsome doctor." "My dream was to become someone who could help people." The crush got her moving. But the profession became her own. Tendo's reaction is subtle. For perhaps the first time in the episode, he allows himself a little warmth. Not because she's confessing or flattering him. But because he realizes: "The thing I admired about her five years ago is still there." That's recognition.
And then it ends with him telling her not to get cocky and she walks into the door he has closed. Lol, love it. Hope the drama continues in this way! Gambatte!

I 100% agree with Tendou that Sakura's confession was crazy! She clearly has some serious growing up to do. I know she believes she wants to be a nurse to get to Tendou, but thankfully it's clear she cares about her patients. Even though she's messing up so much. She needs to learn how to tamper her nerves and be calmer. She reacts fast, but then fumbles.
It was hard to watch her confess on her first day at work. In front of everyone. Not to mention not even thinking about how Tendou would be feeling or anything. I mean just saying "you inspired me that day". But she didn't know her own true feelings. It was a relief to hear her finally say that she found her calling that day. Just her excitement over Tendou apparently out weighed all that.
Kisugi seems super sketchy. Like his reason for helping Sakura isn't to help her out, but to maybe be a bur in Tendou's shoe. Or maybe whatever they were referring to that made Tendou not smile. I'd like that. A friend helping his buddy out.
That ending. She's clearly going to be Tendou's sister. Espeiclaly since I felt a meet queue with Nishi at that show. They're gonna have a cute romance I hope!
Despite some awkward parts to watch, I enjoyed this drama's start. There's promise . . . also THE scenes that instagram blessed me with. He-he. They might be spoilers, but they got me here.

I cried a few times just because this show hit some topics that I have a personal history with T_T but there was one line I wanted to remember forever! And so I'm going to write it down in an episode reaction!!!"In a hospital there are many sick people. Doctors look after the 'sick' part. Nurses look at the 'people.' It's not just curing an illness. They help them live. That's the kind of place this is." AND I IMMEDIATELY BURST INTO TEARS

As all pilot episodes should be this was very engaging and has successfully hooked me into the show by laying down enough plot, comedy, and romance. It also was great that is left a sense of trouble looming on the horizon to keep me coming back for more.

I am usually the type of person that only watches twenty-two-minute shows but decided to give this a chance because the plot seemed very interesting and there was an actor that I had seen previously. Somehow this show kept me watching for a whole hour and it great. The humor is great and hearing Keisuke Watanabe saying Maou? as if it was a strange word for him was a cherry on top for me. The plot with Sakura confessing int the beginning was great as it moved to the story alow at a good pace and Ill definitely watch more of this. I also loved how Maou told Sakura that if she really just became a nurse to be with him, she might as well leave. Truly, nursing is not a job that someone without the passion for the patients should do and doctors can be like that to their nurses irl.
